The file isn\u2019t corrupt \u2014 the problem is almost always <em>what\u2019s inside<\/em> the MOV container, not the container itself. MOV is Apple\u2019s QuickTime format, and modern iPhones often record into it using a codec Windows can\u2019t decode out of the box. We verified the two facts that cause most of this \u2014 Microsoft\u2019s HEVC extension being a paid add-on, and Apple discontinuing QuickTime for Windows \u2014 against Microsoft and CISA directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Quick answer:<\/strong> A MOV usually won\u2019t play on Windows because the video inside is <strong>HEVC\/H.265<\/strong> (Windows needs Microsoft\u2019s <strong>HEVC Video Extensions<\/strong>, a paid $0.99 Store add-on, to decode it) or <strong>Apple ProRes<\/strong> (no native Windows support at all). Apple also <strong>stopped supporting QuickTime for Windows in 2016<\/strong>, so the old Apple player is a dead end and a security risk. MOV is Apple\u2019s QuickTime File Format, the same underlying structure MP4 descends from. That\u2019s the key insight: <strong>the <code>.mov<\/code> extension tells you almost nothing about whether Windows can play it.<\/strong> What matters is the <em>codec<\/em> of the video stream packed inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Windows Media Player and the modern Windows 11 Media Player can decode a MOV just fine when the video inside is plain <strong>H.264<\/strong> \u2014 the universally-supported codec. The trouble starts when the video is something newer or Apple-specific that Windows doesn\u2019t ship a decoder for. The classic symptoms \u2014 a black screen with audio, a \u201ccodec missing\u201d error, or a file that simply won\u2019t open \u2014 almost always trace back to one of the two codecs below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hevc\">Cause 1: the video is HEVC\/H.265<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is by far the most common cause. Since the iPhone 7 \/ iOS 11, Apple devices default to recording in <strong>HEVC (H.265)<\/strong> under the \u201cHigh Efficiency\u201d camera setting, because it produces roughly half the file size of H.264 at the same quality. Those recordings land in a <code>.mov<\/code> (or <code>.heic<\/code> for photos) container with an HEVC video stream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem: <strong>Windows does not include an HEVC decoder by default.<\/strong> To play HEVC video, you have to install Microsoft\u2019s <strong>HEVC Video Extensions<\/strong> from the Microsoft Store \u2014 and the publicly listed version costs <strong>$0.99<\/strong> (it\u2019s a paid app because HEVC carries patent-licensing fees). Microsoft\u2019s own Media Player codec documentation confirms the extension is required: \u201cHEVC Video Extension: Adds support for the HEVC (H.265) video format,\u201d available separately from the Store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a free variant called <strong>\u201cHEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer,\u201d<\/strong> which is functionally identical but was intended for PC makers (Dell, HP, Lenovo) who already pay the HEVC license to preinstall on their hardware. It\u2019s the same codec; only <em>who pays the license<\/em> differs. Microsoft has made the free version harder to reach over time, so for most people the practical options are pay $0.99, or skip the extension entirely and use VLC or convert the file (covered below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"prores\">Cause 2: the video is Apple ProRes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the MOV came out of a professional or \u201cProRes\u201d recording workflow \u2014 Final Cut Pro exports, ProRes log footage from a recent iPhone Pro, screen recordings from some Mac apps \u2014 the video stream may be <strong>Apple ProRes<\/strong>. ProRes is a high-bitrate editing codec, and <strong>Windows has no native support for it at all<\/strong> \u2014 there isn\u2019t even a paid Store extension that fixes it the way the HEVC extension does for H.265.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Historically the only way to decode ProRes on Windows was through Apple\u2019s QuickTime for Windows, which is now discontinued (next section). Today the reliable answers for a ProRes MOV are the same as the universal fix: open it in <strong>VLC<\/strong>, which has its own ProRes decoder, or <strong>convert it to MP4 (H.264)<\/strong> so any Windows player can read it. Because ProRes files are very large, converting also shrinks them dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"quicktime\">Cause 3: you\u2019re relying on QuickTime for Windows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, the answer to \u201cMOV won\u2019t play on Windows\u201d was \u201cinstall Apple QuickTime.\u201d <strong>That advice is now dangerous.<\/strong> In April 2016, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA, then US-CERT) published an alert stating that <strong>Apple would no longer be providing security updates for QuickTime for Windows<\/strong>, leaving systems running it vulnerable, and the recommended mitigation was the <strong>only<\/strong> one available: <strong>uninstall QuickTime for Windows entirely.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So if you still have QuickTime for Windows installed to play MOV files, you\u2019re running software that has had <strong>no security patches for nearly a decade<\/strong> and has known, unpatched remote-code-execution vulnerabilities. Remove it. It\u2019s the fastest no-cost way to <em>watch<\/em> a stubborn MOV right now.<\/li><li><strong>HEVC Video Extensions<\/strong> fixes HEVC playback system-wide (so the Photos app and Media Player work natively), but it\u2019s HEVC-only \u2014 it does nothing for a ProRes MOV \u2014 and it costs $0.99.<\/li><li><strong>Converting to MP4 (H.264)<\/strong> is the durable fix: it changes the file so the problem never recurs, on this PC or anyone else\u2019s. The free-and-reliable route is to <strong>use VLC<\/strong> or <strong>convert to MP4 (H.264)<\/strong> instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Should I install QuickTime to play MOV files on Windows?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>No.<\/strong> Apple stopped issuing security updates for <strong>QuickTime for Windows in 2016<\/strong>, and CISA recommended uninstalling it because of unpatched vulnerabilities. The bigger win is compatibility and, if the source was HEVC, you can keep the file reasonably small. Set the codec to <strong>H.264<\/strong> and a high quality level for the best balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My MOV won\u2019t play in VLC either \u2014 now what?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That points to an <strong>Apple ProRes<\/strong> stream or a rare\/uncommon codec, or a partially corrupt download. First re-download or re-export the file. If it\u2019s genuinely ProRes, the most reliable answer is to <strong>convert it to MP4 (H.264)<\/strong>, which replaces the unsupported codec with one every player understands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does Windows 11 play MOV files natively?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Windows 11\u2019s Media Player plays a MOV <strong>only if the video inside is a codec it supports<\/strong> \u2014 H.264 works; <strong>HEVC needs the paid extension<\/strong> and <strong>ProRes isn\u2019t supported at all<\/strong>.
