The reflexive fix is \u201cconvert it to JPG,\u201d but if the photo is headed for a <strong>website<\/strong>, that\u2019s a detour: you re-encode once into JPG, and then your CMS or optimizer plugin often re-encodes it <em>again<\/em> into WebP. Converting <strong>HEIC straight to WebP<\/strong> skips the middleman \u2014 one lossy step instead of two \u2014 and lands directly on the format the modern web actually wants. We verified the browser-support state against caniuse, the compression figures against Google\u2019s and Apple\u2019s own documentation, and the steps below against the live converter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Quick answer:<\/strong> For photos going onto a <strong>website or blog, convert HEIC directly to WebP.<\/strong> WebP displays in roughly <strong>96% of browsers in use<\/strong> (HEIC: about 14%, Safari 17+ only), and Google measures lossy WebP at <strong>25\u201334% smaller than comparable JPEGs<\/strong>. The usual HEIC \u2192 JPG \u2192 WebP pipeline re-encodes your photo twice; HEIC \u2192 WebP re-encodes it once, from the best source you have. WordPress added automatic handling in version 6.7 \u2014 HEIC uploads are converted to <strong>JPEG<\/strong> on the server where the host\u2019s Imagick build supports it, with a warning to convert manually where it doesn\u2019t. Note the fallback it picks: JPEG, the universal choice, not the efficient one. Getting the smaller, web-optimized file is on you, before upload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-webp\">Why WebP beats JPG as the destination<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two facts make WebP the right landing spot for web images in 2026:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Support is effectively universal in modern browsers.<\/strong> Per caniuse, WebP sits at roughly <strong>96% global support<\/strong>: Chrome since version 32, Firefox since 65, Edge since 18, and Safari since version 14 (caniuse notes Safari 14\u201315.6 requires macOS Big Sur or later).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It\u2019s meaningfully smaller than JPEG.<\/strong> Google\u2019s own measurement: \u201cWebP lossy images are 25\u201334% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality index.\u201d Lossless WebP is about 26% smaller than PNG, and the format supports transparency and animation \u2014 both things JPEG can\u2019t do at all. WebP is where efficiency and compatibility overlap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"generation-loss\">One lossy step instead of two<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The part most guides miss: HEIC, JPG, and (standard) WebP are all <strong>lossy formats<\/strong> \u2014 every encode throws away detail to hit its size. The common pipeline looks like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>HEIC \u2192 JPG<\/strong> \u2014 lossy re-encode #1. JPEG quantization discards fine detail and introduces its own artifacts.<\/li><li><strong>JPG \u2192 WebP<\/strong> \u2014 lossy re-encode #2, done by your CMS, a plugin, or a CDN. The WebP encoder now spends bits faithfully reproducing <em>JPEG\u2019s artifacts<\/em> along with the photo, and discards a little more on top.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s <strong>generation loss<\/strong> \u2014 the same reason a photocopy of a photocopy looks worse than either copy alone. Converting <strong>HEIC \u2192 WebP<\/strong> re-encodes exactly once, from the highest-quality version of the photo you own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be honest about the magnitude: at high quality settings, one extra generation is often invisible. But it\u2019s pure downside \u2014 more artifact risk in smooth gradients like skies and skin, bytes wasted encoding JPEG\u2019s blocking, and an extra batch step. When you already know the destination format, convert straight to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"when-jpg\">When JPG is still the right target<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of this makes JPG obsolete. It\u2019s still the <strong>universal<\/strong> image format, and the right target whenever the file leaves your website context:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Email and messaging.<\/strong> You don\u2019t control the recipient\u2019s device or software; JPG opens on all of it.<\/li><li><strong>Upload forms that whitelist extensions.<\/strong> Government portals, job applications, marketplaces, and print services commonly accept <code>.jpg<\/code>\/<code>.png<\/code>, often reject <code>.webp<\/code> \u2014 and almost always reject <code>.heic<\/code>.<\/li><li><strong>Handing files to other people.<\/strong> Clients, print shops, editors: JPG never triggers a \u201ccan\u2019t open this\u201d reply.<\/li><li><strong>Anywhere maximum compatibility beats file size.<\/strong> Older CMSs, kiosk software, legacy tools.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rule of thumb: <strong>publish WebP, share JPG.<\/strong> If the photo goes on a site you control, WebP. The <strong>Quality Preset<\/strong> defaults to <strong>Very High (Recommended)<\/strong>, and the page\u2019s own advice holds: keep the defaults unless you have a specific need.<\/li><li>Resize there too if the photos are larger than your layout will ever render: <strong>Resolution Percentage<\/strong>, <strong>Preset Resolutions<\/strong>, <strong>Width (Keep aspect ratio)<\/strong>, <strong>Height (Keep aspect ratio)<\/strong>, or an exact <strong>Width x Height<\/strong>. Downsizing an oversized camera photo usually saves more bytes than any format choice.<\/li><li>Leave <strong>Lossless?<\/strong> on <strong>No (Recommended)<\/strong> for photographs \u2014 lossless WebP adds no new compression loss, but on camera photos it produces much larger files; it\u2019s the setting for graphics and screenshots.<\/li><li>Click <strong>Convert<\/strong>, then download your WebP files \u2014 individually, or as a ZIP for a batch.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your photos upload over an encrypted connection; each file is processed on our servers and deleted automatically a few hours later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"faq\">FAQ<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is WebP better than HEIC?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For pure compression, no \u2014 caniuse notes HEIC \u201cgenerally has better compression than WebP, JPEG, PNG and GIF.\u201d For the web, <strong>WebP wins decisively<\/strong>: roughly <strong>96% browser support versus about 14%<\/strong> for HEIC (Safari 17+ only). HEIC is a capture-and-storage format; WebP is a delivery format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does converting HEIC to WebP lose quality?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a lossy-to-lossy conversion, so some information is discarded, but <strong>at a high quality preset the difference is generally not visible<\/strong> \u2014 and it\u2019s still one fewer lossy generation than the HEIC \u2192 JPG \u2192 WebP route. And if your stack converts uploads to WebP later anyway, routing through JPG added a second lossy step for nothing. Save JPG for email, forms, and sharing outside the web.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I upload HEIC photos straight to WordPress?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since <strong>WordPress 6.7<\/strong>, HEIC uploads are converted to <strong>JPEG automatically<\/strong> on hosts whose Imagick build supports HEIC (check Site Health \u2192 Info \u2192 Media Handling); otherwise WordPress warns you to convert the file manually. Either way you end up with JPEG, not WebP \u2014 so converting to WebP yourself before uploading still produces the smaller, web-ready result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Should I convert to AVIF instead of WebP?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AVIF is typically smaller again than WebP and adds HDR\/wide-gamut support, with slightly narrower reach (~93% vs ~96% global support). WebP alone is the simple, safe choice; AVIF with a WebP fallback is the maximum-optimization setup.
