A GIF autoplays and loops inline anywhere markdown renders, which is why docs, READMEs, and Slack threads still run on GIFs. This guide converts Mac and iPhone recordings to GIF with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xconvert.com\/convert-mov-to-gif\">xconvert MOV to GIF converter<\/a> \u2014 every UI label and every Apple format claim below was verified against the live tool page and Apple\u2019s own documentation, with the converter\u2019s controls re-checked in August 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Quick answer:<\/strong> Upload the <code>.mov<\/code> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xconvert.com\/convert-mov-to-gif\">xconvert\u2019s MOV to GIF converter<\/a> (<strong>Upload \u2192 From my Computer<\/strong>, or drag and drop). If your file ends in <code>.mp4<\/code>, use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xconvert.com\/convert-mp4-to-gif\">MP4 to GIF converter<\/a> instead; the controls are identical, and there\u2019s a full walkthrough in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xconvert.com\/blog\/mp4-to-gif-screen-recording-slack\/\">screen-recording-to-GIF guide for Slack and docs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything else \u2014 Mac captures, QuickTime recordings, iPhone camera clips (<code>IMG_xxxx.MOV<\/code>), ProRes exports, DSLR\/mirrorless footage \u2014 is MOV territory, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xconvert.com\/convert-mov-to-gif\">MOV to GIF page<\/a> lists all of these among its supported inputs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hevc\">HEVC inside your MOV: what \u201cHigh Efficiency\u201d means<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <code>.mov<\/code> extension tells you the container, not the codec inside it. Since iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra, Apple devices support HEVC \u2014 \u201cHEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), also known as H.265, for videos,\u201d in Apple\u2019s words \u2014 and iPhones capture with it whenever <strong>Settings &gt; Camera &gt; Formats<\/strong> is set to <strong>High Efficiency<\/strong>. Switch that setting to <strong>Most Compatible<\/strong> and, per Apple, \u201call new photos and videos will now use JPEG or H.264 format.\u201d Either way the video still comes out of the phone as a QuickTime <code>.mov<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That codec split is where conversion workflows usually break: HEVC files are smaller, but plenty of older software won\u2019t decode them. For GIF conversion it doesn\u2019t matter here \u2014 the converter page states that it decodes both cases (\u201cHigh Efficiency\u201d HEVC and \u201cMost Compatible\u201d H.264 MOVs) and writes out a standard animated GIF. The decoding happens server-side on xconvert\u2019s machines, so nothing needs to be installed or configured on your end, and the resulting GIF plays literally everywhere \u2014 GIF has no codec-compatibility question at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two related notes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>You don\u2019t need to pre-convert HEVC to H.264<\/strong> just to make a GIF. If you <em>do<\/em> need an H.264 copy of a clip for some other workflow, Apple\u2019s built-in path is QuickTime Player\u2019s <strong>File &gt; Export As<\/strong>, changing \u201cSmaller File Size (HEVC)\u201d to \u201cGreater Compatibility (H.264).\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Expect the GIF to be bigger than the MOV.<\/strong> HEVC is an aggressively compressed video codec; GIF is a stack of palette-limited images. The tool\u2019s own docs note that a 2 MB iPhone HEVC clip routinely becomes a 20 MB GIF at full resolution \u2014 which is exactly why the next two sections exist.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"trim\">Trim before you convert<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GIF has no motion-compensated compression like H.264 or HEVC. Every frame is stored as its own indexed image, so file size grows roughly linearly with duration \u00d7 framerate. Cutting a 30-second recording down to the 8 seconds that actually demonstrate something is the single biggest size win available \u2014 bigger than any framerate or color setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three ways to do it, all verified:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>On a Mac:<\/strong> open the recording in QuickTime Player, choose <strong>Edit &gt; Trim<\/strong>, drag the yellow handles around the part you want to keep, and click <strong>Trim<\/strong> (Apple\u2019s QuickTime Player guide documents this flow; click-and-hold a handle to see individual frames for precise cuts).<\/li><li><strong>On an iPhone:<\/strong> in Photos, open the video, tap <strong>Edit<\/strong>, drag either end of the frame viewer to set new start and stop points, tap <strong>Done<\/strong>, then choose <strong>Save Video<\/strong> or <strong>Save Video as New Clip<\/strong> \u2014 the second option keeps your original untouched.<\/li><li><strong>On xconvert, before converting:<\/strong> the MOV to GIF page has <strong>no trim control<\/strong> \u2014 it converts the whole clip. Run the recording through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xconvert.com\/video-cutter\">video cutter<\/a> (or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xconvert.com\/trim-mov\">trim MOV<\/a>) first, download the shortened clip, then feed that to the converter.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aim for <strong>10 seconds or less<\/strong> for anything going into documentation or chat. Short loops also <em>read<\/em> better: viewers catch the action on the second pass instead of scrubbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"settings\">The settings that keep screen-recording GIFs small<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The converter\u2019s <strong>Advanced Options<\/strong> panel opens on two controls \u2014 <strong>File Compression<\/strong> and <strong>Framerate<\/strong> \u2014 and the manual knobs appear underneath once you set <strong>File Compression<\/strong> to <strong>Custom<\/strong>. Do a quick Get Info on the <code>.mov<\/code> before converting \u2014 a \u201csmall\u201d window recording is often 2,000+ px wide. That\u2019s why the <strong>Width (Keep aspect ratio)<\/strong> field (or <strong>Preset Resolutions<\/strong> \/ <strong>Resolution Percentage<\/strong>, which live in the same Image resolution group, under <strong>Custom<\/strong>) is the control to reach for first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>GIF\u2019s 256-color ceiling.<\/strong> The GIF89a specification caps a color table at 2^8 = 256 entries, so every frame is quantized to at most 256 colors no matter what you pick. Gradients and photos band visibly; flat UI chrome barely changes. That\u2019s why <strong>By Color Reduction + Dither<\/strong> at 64\u2013128 colors is nearly free for screen recordings but should stay on <strong>ORIGINAL<\/strong> for camera footage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For budgeting: GitHub caps attached images and GIFs at <strong>10 MB<\/strong>, and inline previews load noticeably faster under ~5 MB. Per-platform targets (Slack, Notion, GitHub README) are covered in depth in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xconvert.com\/blog\/mp4-to-gif-screen-recording-slack\/\">MP4 screen-recording guide<\/a> \u2014 the same numbers apply regardless of source container.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tool\">Convert MOV to GIF on xconvert<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Open the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xconvert.com\/convert-mov-to-gif\">xconvert MOV to GIF converter<\/a> and click <strong>Upload<\/strong>, then <strong>From my Computer<\/strong> (there are also <strong>From Google Drive<\/strong> and <strong>From Dropbox<\/strong> options), or just drag and drop the <code>.mov<\/code> onto the page.<\/li><li>Expand <strong>Advanced Options<\/strong>. If the GIF has to fit a limit, choose <strong>Max file size<\/strong> and set <strong>Size limit<\/strong> \u2014 <strong>Custom size value<\/strong> to type a number in KB or MB, or the <strong>Discord (10 MB max)<\/strong> \/ <strong>Email (25 MB max)<\/strong> \/ <strong>Forum (2 MB max)<\/strong> presets. The converter searches for settings that land at or under the target, best effort.<\/li><li>For a screen recording, set <strong>File Compression<\/strong> to <strong>Custom<\/strong> instead. That reveals the manual knobs: under <strong>Image resolution<\/strong>, choose <strong>Width (Keep aspect ratio)<\/strong> and enter 480\u2013800, depending on how large the GIF needs to display (<strong>Keep original<\/strong> is the default \u2014 remember the Retina trap above before leaving it there); under <strong>Colors<\/strong>, switch from <strong>ORIGINAL<\/strong> to <strong>By Color Reduction + Dither<\/strong> at 64\u2013128 colors; and leave <strong>Image quality (%)<\/strong> at its default of <strong>80<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Click <strong>Convert<\/strong>. (There\u2019s no trim step here \u2014 the whole clip is converted, so shorten it beforehand as described above.)<\/li><li>Download the GIF and sanity-check the file size before you embed it. Your recording is processed on our servers and deleted automatically a few hours later.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Batch conversion is supported, so a folder of <code>.mov<\/code> clips can go through in one pass with the same settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"faq\">FAQ<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will an iPhone HEVC (.mov) recording convert, or do I need H.264 first?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It converts directly. <strong>The tool decodes both HEVC (\u201cHigh Efficiency\u201d) and H.264 (\u201cMost Compatible\u201d) MOV files on xconvert\u2019s servers<\/strong> \u2014 no codec installs, no QuickTime re-export. Pre-converting to H.264 first just adds a generation of quality loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is my GIF bigger than the MOV it came from?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the formats work in opposite ways. <strong>HEVC\/H.264 store mostly <em>differences<\/em> between frames; GIF stores every frame as a complete palette-limited image.<\/strong> Across 30 days of our own GIF-output jobs, the median MP4-to-GIF landed about <strong>4.9x<\/strong> the size of the source video; an HEVC source, which stores roughly twice as much picture per byte, inflates about twice as far again. So a few-MB screen recording can become a 10\u201320 MB GIF at full resolution. Trim the clip (before uploading), cap the width, and reduce colors \u2014 in that order of impact. If you only care about hitting a number, skip the knobs entirely: set <strong>File Compression<\/strong> to <strong>Max file size<\/strong> and give it the target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does the GIF keep the audio?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No \u2014 <strong>the GIF format has no audio track<\/strong>, so any narration or system audio in the recording is discarded. If sound matters, share the video file itself: GitHub, for example, accepts <code>.mov<\/code>\/<code>.mp4<\/code> attachments in issues and PRs (10 MB on free plans, 100 MB on paid).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What framerate should I use for a screen recording?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>10\u201315 FPS.<\/strong> Mouse movement, typing, and scrolling read fine at 10 FPS (the tool\u2019s recommended default); UI animations and transitions justify 12\u201315.
