Here\u2019s the hard part: if that <code>.m4v<\/code> came from an iTunes Store or Apple TV app <strong>purchase<\/strong> or <strong>rental<\/strong>, it\u2019s sealed with Apple\u2019s <strong>FairPlay DRM<\/strong>, and no format converter \u2014 this one included \u2014 can open it. For a <strong>DRM-free<\/strong> <code>.m4v<\/code> (a HandBrake export, a home movie, a screen recording), converting to MP4 is trivial \u2014 you can often <strong>just rename <code>.m4v<\/code> to <code>.mp4<\/code><\/strong> and it plays, because it is already an MPEG-4 file. The two are cousins in the same family: <code>.mp4<\/code> is formally <strong>MPEG-4 Part 14<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/standard\/38538.html\">ISO\/IEC 14496-14<\/a>), and per <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.mozilla.org\/en-US\/docs\/Web\/Media\/Guides\/Formats\/Containers\">MDN<\/a> it is \u201cderived from the ISO base media file format, which is directly derived from the QuickTime file format developed by Apple.\u201d An <code>.m4v<\/code> is that same MPEG-4 box wearing an Apple label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What sits <em>inside<\/em> the box is what actually plays: a <code>.m4v<\/code> typically carries <strong>H.264<\/strong> (or the newer H.265\/HEVC) video with <strong>AAC<\/strong> audio \u2014 the exact streams a <code>.mp4<\/code> normally holds. These <code>.m4v<\/code> files are encrypted.<\/li><li><strong>Anything you or someone else created<\/strong> \u2014 a HandBrake export, a GoPro or camera clip, a screen recording, a home video, a file a friend made themselves \u2192 <strong>almost certainly DRM-free<\/strong> and convertible.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is why the protected case is a hard wall: a converter works by reading the video and audio <em>streams<\/em> inside the file and re-packaging or re-encoding them. It <strong>cannot read the encrypted streams inside a FairPlay-protected <code>.m4v<\/code> at all<\/strong> \u2014 so <strong>no format converter, xconvert included, can convert an iTunes purchase or rental.<\/strong> The tool will simply reject it. Renaming it to <code>.mp4<\/code> doesn\u2019t help either: the protection lives <em>inside<\/em> the file, not in the extension, so a renamed protected file still refuses to play anywhere outside Apple\u2019s authorized apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stripping FairPlay is a separate legal and technical matter that this tool does not perform and this article does not cover. If your <code>.m4v<\/code> is a store purchase, the honest answer is that a format converter is the wrong tool \u2014 Apple\u2019s own apps are where that content is meant to play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"rename-vs-convert\">Rename or convert? Which your file needs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you\u2019ve confirmed a file is <strong>DRM-free<\/strong>, you have two paths, and the cheaper one often works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The rename trick.<\/strong> Because a <code>.m4v<\/code> is already an MPEG-4 container, many players and apps accept it the instant you change the extension to <code>.mp4<\/code>. The M4V format reference notes that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/M4V\">\u201csome other video players can also recognize and play M4V files if the file extension is changed from \u2018.m4v\u2019 to \u2018.mp4\u2019\u201d<\/a>, and Apple documents the very same move for M4V\u2019s sibling QuickTime \u2014 you can <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/120755\">rename an H.264 <code>.mov<\/code> to <code>.mp4<\/code><\/a> and it just plays. So it works when the app\u2019s only objection was the unfamiliar extension, and it fails when the file\u2019s actual contents are the problem:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The target needs a different codec.<\/strong> An older TV, console, or editor may want H.264, but your <code>.m4v<\/code> holds HEVC (H.265) \u2014 renaming won\u2019t change the codec, so it still won\u2019t play.<\/li><li><strong>The audio is Dolby Digital (AC-3).<\/strong> Many non-Apple players can\u2019t decode it, so you get <strong>video with no sound<\/strong> \u2014 a classic \u201cI renamed it and it half-works\u201d symptom.<\/li><li><strong>A strict uploader validates the file<\/strong> and rejects a container it wasn\u2019t expecting.<\/li><li>(And, as covered above, it <strong>never<\/strong> removes DRM.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When any of those apply, you need a <strong>real conversion<\/strong>: re-package the file into a proper MP4 and, where necessary, re-encode the video and audio to broadly supported <strong>H.264 + AAC<\/strong>. That\u2019s the reliable path when you don\u2019t know exactly what\u2019s inside, or when \u201cit played on my machine but not theirs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rule of thumb: rename to test, convert to be sure.<\/strong> If a renamed <code>.mp4<\/code> plays everywhere you need it, you\u2019re finished. The moment anything balks \u2014 no sound, wrong codec, a rejected upload \u2014 convert it properly to MP4\/H.264\/AAC for universal playback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One reassurance about quality: a proper conversion of a DRM-free <code>.m4v<\/code> is usually a lossless <strong>rewrap<\/strong> \u2014 the streams are copied into the MP4 untouched \u2014 and only becomes a quality-affecting <strong>re-encode<\/strong> when the codec or audio must change. The container never sets picture quality; the codec inside does. Every movie, TV episode, or rental from the iTunes Store or Apple TV app is encrypted so it plays only on devices authorized with the Apple Account that bought it. A converter can\u2019t read those encrypted streams, so <strong>no format converter can process it<\/strong> \u2014 xconvert will reject it. Protected purchases are meant to play in Apple\u2019s own apps on authorized devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"faq-all-drm\">Are all M4V files DRM-protected?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>No.<\/strong> DRM is <em>optional<\/em> in the M4V format. Only video <strong>bought or rented from Apple<\/strong> carries FairPlay. A <code>.m4v<\/code> you exported from HandBrake, recorded on a camera or GoPro, captured as a screen recording, or received from someone who made it themselves is almost always <strong>DRM-free<\/strong> and converts (or renames) without trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"faq-how-to-tell\">How do I know if my M4V has FairPlay DRM?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Check where it came from.<\/strong> If you bought or rented it from the iTunes Store or Apple TV app, it\u2019s protected. If you or another person created it, it isn\u2019t. A protected file also gives itself away in use: it will prompt for Apple Account authorization, or simply refuse to open, when you try to play it outside an authorized Apple device or app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"faq-m4v-vs-mp4\">What\u2019s the difference between M4V and MP4?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Very little, technically.<\/strong> Both are MPEG-4 containers, and a <code>.m4v<\/code> usually holds the same H.264\/AAC streams as a <code>.mp4<\/code>. The differences are Apple-specific: a <code>.m4v<\/code> can be wrapped in <strong>FairPlay DRM<\/strong>, and it may carry <strong>Dolby Digital audio<\/strong>.
