Your iPhone still records video into a <code>.mov<\/code> file; what changes is that the video inside is now <strong>H.264<\/strong> \u2014 the same codec that fills most <code>.mp4<\/code> files \u2014 instead of HEVC. Two separate mechanisms decide what actually leaves the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sharing (AirDrop, Messages, email).<\/strong> Apple: <em>\u201cIf sharing this media using other methods, such as AirDrop, Messages, or email, and the receiving device doesn\u2019t support the newer media formats, the media might automatically be shared in a more compatible format, such as JPEG or H.264.\u201d<\/em> In other words, iOS frequently converts on the fly the moment it detects a non-Apple recipient \u2014 no setting required.
