This guide sorts out what you got back, how to turn it into small MP4s that play everywhere, and what converting <em>can\u2019t<\/em> do \u2014 it can\u2019t turn standard-def tape into HD. That\u2019s why a DV <code>.AVI<\/code> runs to many gigabytes \u2014 and exactly why re-encoding to H.264 shrinks it so dramatically. (Raw <code>.dv<\/code>\/<code>.dif<\/code> captures hold the same DV data without a friendly wrapper \u2014 treat them like the AVI\/DV case.)<\/li><li><strong>MPG\/MPEG is MPEG-2.<\/strong> Many capture cards and standalone recorders wrote MPEG-2, the same codec DVDs use. Re-encoding to H.264 typically produces a far smaller file at the same visual quality \u2014 the win is biggest with DV <code>.AVI<\/code>, which barely compresses at all.<\/li><li><strong>It\u2019s a true re-encode, not a rename.<\/strong> MP4 can\u2019t just \u201chold\u201d DV or MPEG-2, so the converter decodes the old codec and re-compresses it as H.264 \u2014 which takes a little processing time and is why the file shrinks so much. A tool that finishes an AVI or VOB conversion <em>instantly<\/em> isn\u2019t really converting it. That\u2019s all the detail the tape ever held. Choosing a 1080p or 4K preset doesn\u2019t <em>add<\/em> detail \u2014 it just stretches the same pixels over a bigger grid, often looking softer, not sharper. Keep the original resolution; an AI upscale, if you want one, is a separate step with its own tradeoffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other SD-era gotcha is <strong>interlacing<\/strong>. BT.601 video is interlaced: each frame is actually two \u201cfields\u201d of alternating scan lines, captured a fraction of a second apart. On the old CRT TV they were meant for, that\u2019s invisible. On a modern progressive screen, showing both fields together makes fast motion look like it\u2019s split by fine horizontal teeth \u2014 the artifact everyone calls <strong>combing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fixing combing requires a <strong>deinterlacing<\/strong> pass, which merges or interpolates the two fields into clean progressive frames. The cleanest place to do it is <strong>at capture time<\/strong> \u2014 most capture programs offer a deinterlace option, and getting it right there beats fixing it later. If your files already show combing, deinterlacing has to happen during a re-encode. Be aware that a straightforward format converter (xconvert\u2019s included) changes the container and codec but doesn\u2019t expose a dedicated deinterlace filter, so for stubborn combing you may need a desktop tool with an explicit deinterlace setting. If your footage looks clean in motion, you don\u2019t need to worry about any of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"archive\">Archive smart: one master, many copies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your digitized tapes are unrepeatable, so treat the first good conversion as an <strong>archival master<\/strong> and make lighter copies from it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Make one high-quality master.<\/strong> Convert at a high quality setting and <strong>keep the original resolution<\/strong> \u2014 this is the copy you back up (an external drive <em>and<\/em> cloud) and never touch again.<\/li><li><strong>Make smaller share copies from the master.<\/strong> For emailing relatives or posting to a family group, create a compressed MP4 \u2014 a lower bitrate or a target size.
