Because the page is described mathematically, it has no inherent pixel resolution at all \u2014 it is <em>resolution-independent<\/em>. That\u2019s the whole point of PDF: a document that looks identical whether viewed on a phone or printed on a billboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JPG has no such freedom. Large files; reserve for genuine archival needs.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re unsure, <strong>300 DPI is the safe answer<\/strong> for any output you might print, and 150 DPI is the safe answer for purely on-screen use. Going higher than 300 rarely improves what the eye can see on a normal page and multiplies the file size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"scanned\">The one case DPI can\u2019t fix: scanned PDFs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s an important exception to \u201cjust raise the DPI.\u201d If your PDF is a <strong>scan<\/strong> \u2014 a photograph or scanner image of a paper document wrapped in a PDF \u2014 then the page content is <em>already<\/em> a raster image at whatever resolution it was scanned. The text isn\u2019t vector; it\u2019s pixels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that case, rasterizing at a higher render DPI doesn\u2019t add detail, because there\u2019s no underlying vector geometry to sample more finely. Setting 600 DPI on a PDF that was scanned at 100 DPI just produces a larger image of the same blur \u2014 like enlarging a small photo.
