This is where the newer format earns its place. AAC was designed to deliver better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate. Compatibility: where each one plays

This is MP3’s home turf, and the reason it refuses to die. MP3 plays on essentially everything. Every phone, every car stereo, every Bluetooth speaker, every cheap media player, every editing app, and decoders in hardware going back decades — MP3 is the universal donor of audio formats. If you have no idea what will open the file, MP3 is the safe bet.

M4A/AAC is very widely supported in 2026 — natively on all Apple devices, modern Android phones, current browsers, and mainstream software — but the long tail is where it stumbles: some older car head units, budget MP3 players, and legacy audio software either won’t read .m4a or choke on it. The quickest way to tell them apart is file size: a 4-minute song that’s 3–5 MB is almost certainly AAC (lossy); the same song at 20–40 MB is likely ALAC (lossless).
