3GP to AMR Converter

A 3GP file is a 3GPP mobile-phone video container that holds a video track and an audio track. AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) is an audio-only speech codec — the format behind old phone voice memos, ringtones, and call recordings. Converting 3GP to AMR discards the video, pulls the audio out, and re-encodes it as a small voice-optimized clip. It is the right choice for recorded speech you want to keep tiny; for music or general audio, use 3GP to MP3 instead.

3GP Format at a Glance

Property Value
Standard 3GPP TS 26.244 (based on ISO/IEC 14496-12, the MP4 base format)
Container holds Video + audio (a multimedia container, not a codec)
Typical audio inside AMR-NB or AAC; older handsets used AMR, newer ones AAC
Typical video inside H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, or H.264
File extension .3gp (GSM phones), .3g2 (CDMA phones)
Designed for Capturing and playing video on early 3G mobile phones

AMR Format at a Glance

Property Value
Standard 3GPP TS 26.071 / TS 26.090 (AMR-NB), standardized October 1999
Type Audio-only speech codec (no video)
Sample rate 8 kHz (AMR-NB); 16 kHz for the wideband variant, AMR-WB
Audio bandwidth 200–3400 Hz (AMR-NB) — covers human speech, not full music range
Channels Mono only
Bitrates Eight modes, 4.75–12.2 kbps (AMR-NB); 6.6–23.85 kbps (AMR-WB)
File extension .amr
Best for Voice memos, call recordings, dictation, telephony — not music

How to Convert 3GP to AMR

  1. Upload Your 3GP File: Drag and drop, or click "Add Files" to load one or more .3gp / .3g2 files. Only the audio track is used; the video is dropped.
  2. Pick the AMR Codec: Under Advanced Options, in Audio Codec choose AMR Narrow Band (8 kHz, the classic phone-voice format) or AMR Wide Band for clearer speech at a slightly larger size.
  3. Set Bitrate and Channel (Optional): AMR is mono by default; pick a Quality Preset or a constant bitrate (4.75–12.2 kbps for AMR-NB). Higher bitrate means clearer voice and a bigger file. Use Trim to keep only the part you need.
  4. Convert and Download: Click "Convert" and download your .amr file. Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours. No sign-up, no watermark.

Will the Conversion Lose Quality?

It depends on what is inside the 3GP. If the 3GP's audio is already AMR — common on older phones — the conversion is close to a re-wrap with little to no loss. If the audio is AAC, it is a lossy-to-lossy re-encode through AMR-NB's 8 kHz narrowband path, so expect audible degradation: speech stays intelligible, but anything musical will sound thin and muffled because the high frequencies and stereo are gone. The trade-off is size — at 12.2 kbps, one minute of AMR-NB is only about 90 KB, a fraction of the original video.

Frequently Asked Questions

What programs open an AMR file?

VLC, FFmpeg, and Audacity open AMR on Windows, macOS, and Linux. On phones, Android's voice recorder and iOS both handle AMR natively. Many general desktop players do not, which is one reason people convert AMR to a wider-support format like AMR to MP3.

Should I pick AMR-NB or AMR-WB?

Pick AMR Narrow Band (8 kHz, 200–3400 Hz) for classic phone-voice recordings and maximum compatibility with legacy devices. Pick AMR Wide Band (16 kHz, 50–7000 Hz) when you want clearer, more natural speech — it is the "HD Voice" codec — and your target device or player supports it. Neither is meant for music.

Why does my AMR file sound thin or muffled?

AMR-NB only encodes the 200–3400 Hz band at 8 kHz mono — enough for spoken words, but it strips the highs, lows, and stereo that music and ambient sound need. That is by design: the codec trades fidelity for tiny size and voice clarity. If the source had music, convert to a full-range format like 3GP to MP3 instead.

How much smaller is AMR than the original 3GP video?

Dramatically smaller, because the video is discarded and the audio is compressed to a speech bitrate. At 12.2 kbps, AMR-NB is roughly 90 KB per minute, so a multi-megabyte phone clip can shrink to tens of kilobytes. In our testing, a one-minute 3GP voice clip exported to AMR-NB at 12.2 kbps came out near that 90 KB mark.

Can I convert just part of the 3GP?

Yes. Use the Trim controls in Advanced Options to set a start time and duration, and only that segment is extracted and encoded to AMR. This is handy for pulling a single spoken passage out of a longer recording.

Is the conversion private?

Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours. There is no sign-up and no watermark, and your files are never shared or made public.
