Higher quality settings preserve more detail but result in larger files. Lower settings reduce file size by increasing compression.

Capture a single frame at the specified time. For example, 2.100 means 2 seconds and 100 milliseconds into the video.

3GPP to HEIC Converter

A .3gpp file is a 3GP mobile video clip — the container older phones recorded over 3G networks. This tool grabs a single still frame from that clip and saves it as a HEIC image, the compact HEVC-based still format Apple uses by default on iPhone. Pick the exact moment by timestamp; you get one image out, not the whole video.

3GPP (3GP) Format at a Glance

Property Value
Container 3GP, based on the ISO Base Media File Format (ISO/IEC 14496-12), the same structural base as MP4
File extension .3gp.3gpp is the specification's name for the same files, not a different format
Video codecs H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, or H.264/AVC
Audio codecs AMR-NB, AMR-WB, AAC-LC, HE-AAC
Designed for 3G mobile capture and streaming, so clips are usually low-resolution (often 176×144 to 640×480)
Related format 3G2 (.3g2) from 3GPP2 is a separate CDMA-phone variant

HEIC Format at a Glance

Property Value
Standard HEIF, ISO/IEC 23008-12 (MPEG-H Part 12), a special case of ISOBMFF
Codec HEVC-encoded stills (HEIF + HEVC = HEIC)
Introduced 2015, by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG)
Bit depth Up to 10-bit color
Native OS support iOS 11+, macOS High Sierra+, Windows 10 1803+ (needs the HEVC codec), Android 10+
Browser support Safari 17+ only; Chrome, Firefox, and Edge do not decode HEIC (about 14% global support)
Best for Saving Apple-ecosystem disk space; not for sharing with non-Apple users

How to Convert 3GPP to HEIC

  1. Upload Your 3GPP File: Drag and drop your .3gpp (or .3gp) clip, or click "+ Add Files" to browse.
  2. Pick the Frame with Specific Frame: Under Advanced Options, "Specific Frame" is the default. Set "Time (seconds)" to the moment you want — for example, 2.100 means 2 seconds and 100 milliseconds in.
  3. Set Quality Preset and Image resolution: Choose a "Quality Preset" (Very High is the default) and keep the original "Image resolution" or scale it down to trim file size.
  4. Convert and Download: Click "Convert" and download your HEIC still. No sign-up, no watermark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is .3gpp a different format from .3gp?

No. .3gpp and .3gp are the same container — 3GP was defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), and some devices simply write the longer extension. They hold identical video and audio data, so this tool treats them the same. If your file ends in .3gp or .3g2, use the 3GP to HEIC converter instead; it accepts both of those extensions.

Will the HEIC open on Windows or Android?

Not always. HEIC decodes natively on iPhone, iPad, and Mac (iOS 11+, macOS High Sierra+). Windows 10 (1803+) can open it only after installing Microsoft's HEVC codec, and Android added support in version 10. In browsers, only Safari 17+ displays HEIC — Chrome, Firefox, and Edge do not. If you need a still that opens everywhere, convert to 3GPP to JPG instead.

Why does my frame look low-resolution?

Because 3GP was built for 3G-era phones, the source video is often small — anywhere from 176×144 up to about 640×480. A still frame can only be as sharp as the video it came from; HEIC cannot add detail that was never recorded. Picking a frame from a sharper, well-lit moment helps more than raising the quality setting.

What does HEIC give me over the original 3GP frame?

HEIC stores the still with HEVC compression and up to 10-bit color, so the file is typically smaller than an equivalent PNG at the same quality. In our testing, a single 640×480 frame from a 3GP clip saved as HEIC came out a few tens of kilobytes — noticeably smaller than the same frame as a lossless PNG. The trade-off is compatibility: PNG and JPG open anywhere, HEIC mostly on Apple devices.

Can I extract several frames instead of just one?

Yes. Switch from "Specific Frame" to "Multiple Screenshots" in Advanced Options to sample frames at an interval across the clip. By default the tool captures one frame at the timestamp you set, which is what most people want when pulling a thumbnail or a single moment.

Does the converted HEIC keep the recording date or GPS from the 3GP?

Not reliably. 3GP clips often carry little metadata to begin with, and extracting a single frame writes a fresh image rather than copying container-level tags. Treat the HEIC as a new still — if you need the original capture time, read it from the source clip's file properties before converting.

How are my files handled, and how long do you keep them?

Your 3GPP file is uploaded over an encrypted connection and processed on our servers — there is no sign-up and no watermark, and files are never shared or made public. Uploaded files and their results are deleted automatically a few hours after conversion.
