Per MDN, the Vorbis spec supports 45-500 kbps VBR; xconvert exposes presets from 4.75 kbps (AMR-tier voice) up through 320-510 kbps for completeness.
No. AMR-NB audio in 3GPP files is captured at 4.75-12.2 kbps with an 8 kHz sample rate — that's a lossy, voice-optimized signal. Re-encoding to a higher Vorbis bitrate preserves what's there but cannot reconstruct frequencies AMR threw away. Pick a Vorbis bitrate that matches the source: 64-96 kbps is plenty for AMR-NB, 96-128 kbps for AMR-WB.
Both are Xiph.Org codecs and both can live inside .ogg. Vorbis (2000) is the older, broadly-supported codec; Opus (2012) is its successor, with better quality at low bitrates and lower latency. If you need maximum compatibility with older players and web browsers, choose Vorbis. If you control the playback chain and want best-in-class compression, use 3GPP to Opus instead.
Not natively. Per MDN's audio codec documentation, Safari on macOS and iOS does not decode Vorbis. iOS users would need a third-party app like VLC for iOS. For Apple-bound content use 3GPP to M4A (AAC, the native iOS codec) or 3GPP to MP3.
Vorbis uses a more advanced psychoacoustic model and lapped transforms tuned after MP3's design was frozen. The audible difference is most obvious at lower bitrates — Vorbis at 96 kbps sounds noticeably cleaner than MP3 at 96 kbps on hi-hats, sibilance, and reverb tails. The gap narrows above 192 kbps where both formats become near-transparent.
AMR-NB records at 8 kHz, AMR-WB at 16 kHz. Leave Audio Sample Rate at 8000 Hz (or 16000 Hz for AMR-WB) — there's no benefit to upsampling to 44.1 kHz since no new frequency content is created. Higher sample rates just make the file bigger without sounding better.
Yes — that's exactly what this converter does. 3GPP is a container that can hold MPEG-4 video plus AMR audio. Converting to OGG (an audio-only output) discards the video track automatically. If you want to keep the video, use a video-to-video conversion like 3GPP to MP4 instead.
