Three container rules apply automatically, and each one overrides what you might expect from the source file.

MJPEG is worth considering only when you need frame-independent decoding — it produces much larger files, because there is no inter-frame compression at all.

Why This Is a Re-encode, Not a Container Swap

DivX video cannot simply be moved into an SWF: the container accepts Flash video or MJPEG, not MPEG-4 ASP. Every frame is therefore decoded and re-compressed, and the MP3 audio is decoded and re-encoded at 44.1 kHz. That means exactly one generation of loss on both tracks, on top of whatever loss the DivX already carried. Keep the original .divx if you may need a cleaner master, and raise Quality Preset toward Highest when fidelity matters more than file size.

Why would anyone still convert DivX to SWF?

Not for playback. Flash Player has been retired since the end of 2020, and browsers removed the plugin. The real remaining reasons are a standalone Flash projector that still runs on an offline machine, importing footage into a legacy Flash or Animate authoring project, and matching an archive whose catalogue expects .swf assets. For any modern viewing, MP4 is the answer.

What can actually open an SWF file now?

No current mainstream browser. Your practical options are the standalone Flash projector if you still have a copy, VLC for simple video-bearing SWFs, and Ruffle, the open-source Flash emulator. Ruffle publishes compatibility figures for ActionScript — its compatibility page reports 99% language coverage for ActionScript 1/2 and 90% for ActionScript 3 — but publishes no figure for embedded video, so treat video-bearing SWFs there as worth testing rather than guaranteed.

Which codecs does the SWF actually contain?

FLV video with MP3 audio unless you change the video codec. FLV in this context is the Sorenson-derived H.263 variant that Flash used for video; the alternative under Video Codec is MJPEG. Audio has no alternative: the SWF muxer accepts MP3 only, which is why the Audio Codec group offers just that one entry.

Why is my audio 44.1 kHz when the source was 48 kHz?

Because SWF only permits 44.1, 22.05 and 11.025 kHz audio. Rather than let the mux fail, our pipeline resamples the track to 44.1 kHz for every SWF output. The change is inaudible in normal listening, but it does mean the output audio is not a bit-for-bit sample-rate match with the source.

Will I lose quality converting DivX to SWF?

Yes, one generation on each track. The video is decoded from MPEG-4 ASP and re-encoded to Flash video (or MJPEG), and the audio is decoded and re-encoded to MP3 at 44.1 kHz. Choosing a higher Quality Preset or a larger Specific file size reduces the visible cost at the price of a bigger file. Nothing recovers what the original DivX encode already discarded.

Does the SWF include playback controls or interactivity?

No. What you get is a linear video stream wrapped in the SWF container — there is no timeline scripting, no ActionScript, no play/pause UI. If you need a skinned player, buttons, or interactive behaviour, that has to be authored in Flash/Animate around the video, which is outside what a format converter does.

Can I trim or shrink the clip before exporting?

Yes, and it is usually worth doing. Trim → Time Range takes a start time and duration in seconds or HH:MM:SS.sss, so you export only the section you need. Resolution Percentage or a Preset Resolution scales the frame down, which matters more than usual here because Flash video is a comparatively inefficient codec at large frame sizes.

Should I convert to SWF at all, or straight to MP4?

MP4 unless a specific legacy tool demands SWF. H.264 in MP4 plays natively in every current browser and on phones, TVs, and editors, and it compresses far better than Flash video. Use DivX to MP4 for that, or SWF to MP4 if you are trying to rescue content that is already trapped in a Flash file.
