DNG (Adobe Digital Negative) is an archival RAW photo format; HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding, also called H.265) is a video codec. This converter renders a DNG still and holds it on screen as a short, silent H.265 clip — so the output is a video file, not a still image. Be honest about the mismatch before you start: a DNG is a single high-quality photograph, HEVC is a motion-video codec, and HEVC is also the slowest to encode and the least universally playable of the common codecs. If you only want a normal, viewable photo, convert DNG to JPG or DNG to PNG instead. If you genuinely need a still as a clip, DNG to MP4 produces H.264 video that plays everywhere — a better default than HEVC for almost everyone. Choose HEVC only when a specific device or pipeline requires the H.265 codec by name.

A single DNG is one still photograph with no motion inside it, so a one-file conversion produces a freeze-frame clip: the rendered image held on screen for the Duration you set, encoded with H.265 by default. Because a still photo has nothing to animate and carries no sound, no audio codec is offered and the converter writes no audio stream — the clip is silent by design. Two consequences are worth knowing before you commit to HEVC: the converter applies a standard render that bakes in white balance, exposure, and tone, so the RAW editing latitude that is the whole reason to shoot DNG is gone once it is a video frame; and a 20-60 MP RAW scaled down to a video frame discards most of the original resolution. Keep the master DNG for any future editing — the HEVC clip is a delivery file, not an archive.
For almost every purpose, MP4 or a still image is the better target. A DNG is a high-quality RAW photo and HEVC is a motion-video codec, so the pairing mismatches twice — still-into-video, and into the codec with the weakest playback support. If you want to view, print, or share the photo, convert DNG to JPG or DNG to PNG. If you need a playable clip, DNG to MP4 makes an H.264 video that plays everywhere. Not in any way that helps here. HEVC's headline advantage is roughly 50% smaller files than H.264 at the same quality for real footage, but a single still held on screen is trivial to compress for either codec, so the size difference is negligible. Wrapping a photo in HEVC adds no image detail and cannot recover resolution lost when the high-MP RAW is scaled to a video frame. What it does cost you is compatibility and encode time, since HEVC is patent-encumbered and the slowest of the common codecs to encode.
Because a still photograph contains no audio. For an image source the converter hides the audio codec entirely and writes a video-only file, so the clip is silent by design rather than by accident. If you want music or narration, convert first, then add an audio track in any video editor.
Often not without help. HEVC playback is patchy: many newer phones, TVs, and Apple devices decode it fine, but older hardware, several desktop players, and most web browsers do not play H.265 natively. A bare .hevc is also a raw H.265 elementary stream rather than a rich container, so some players expect it muxed into MP4 or MKV first. If you need something that just plays, use DNG to MP4 (H.264) instead — that is why MP4 is the better default for a single still.
Yes, substantially, and it is inherent to the conversion rather than a tool flaw. A DNG holds unprocessed, high-bit-depth sensor data that must be demosaiced to become viewable; that render bakes in white balance, exposure, and tone, and a 20-60 MP RAW is then scaled down to a video frame, discarding most of the resolution. HEVC is also a lossy delivery codec. The result is fine for watching on a screen but is not a way to archive the photo — keep the original DNG. In our testing, a single 24-megapixel DNG converted at the Very High preset produced a short, silent H.265 clip that played on a recent iPhone but would not open natively in a desktop browser.
DNG is an open, royalty-free RAW format Adobe introduced on September 27, 2004, built on the TIFF/EP standard as a camera-agnostic archival container. In March 2026 it was published as an international standard, ISO 12234-4, putting it alongside formats like TIFF and PDF. Because the specification is public, DNG decoding is well supported and stable, so converting it carries none of the lock-in risk of a camera maker's proprietary RAW.
