This conversion joins the two ends of a long obsolescence. DV is the tape codec that MiniDV, DVCAM and DVCPRO camcorders recorded from the mid-1990s onward — intra-frame DCT at 25 Mbit/s, standardised as IEC 61834 and SMPTE 314M. SWF is Adobe's Flash container, originally defined by FutureWave in 1996 and frozen since.
The honesty note has to come first: SWF is a dead delivery format. Adobe ended Flash Player support on December 31, 2020 and began blocking Flash content from running on January 12, 2021, and no current browser plays it. A SWF you create today needs the Ruffle emulator or a standalone projector to open at all. If your goal is to get old tape footage into something watchable, DV to MP4 is the conversion you want and this page is not.
Outside those, converting to SWF trades a widely readable archival source for a file almost nothing opens.

The measured figures above come from encoding the same 4-second DV capture both ways at the default quality. Unless something downstream has asked for JPEG frames, leave the dropdown on FLV.

No. Adobe ended Flash Player support on December 31, 2020 and began blocking Flash content on January 12, 2021, and Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari removed Flash playback around that time. To open a SWF today you need the Ruffle emulator or a standalone Flash projector. Ruffle targets older Flash animations and games rather than acting as a general video player, so a transcoded video inside a SWF may not behave the way an original Flash animation would.
Because the SWF container accepts only 44,100 Hz, 22,050 Hz and 11,025 Hz, and DV audio is 48 kHz PCM — a rate SWF has no slot for. Rather than let the job fail, the pipeline sets 44.1 kHz for every SWF output. That resampling is inaudible in practice, but it is worth knowing that it is happening and that it is not optional: there is no sample-rate control on this page because there is nothing useful to choose between.
Yes, if it was shot anamorphic. DV stores a 720-column picture and signals the intended shape separately as a pixel aspect ratio; SWF has no equivalent signal, so the frame plays at its stored dimensions. A 16:9 NTSC capture that should display at 853x480 will play as 720x480 and look horizontally compressed. Fix it before converting by setting Video resolution to Width x Height and typing the display size — 853 x 480 for 16:9 NTSC, 1024 x 576 for 16:9 PAL. Footage shot 4:3 is only mildly affected and most people leave it.
Because those are the video codecs the SWF muxer will write. SWF predates H.264 and never adopted it for general video playback, so there is no modern-codec path inside this container no matter what the source was. FLV1 is the codec Flash video was built around and is the default here; MJPEG exists for tools that specifically want intraframe JPEG frames, at roughly two and a half times the size.
Technically it is an excellent source and practically it is an odd one. DV's intra-frame encoding means the decoder never has to reconstruct from a distant keyframe, so every frame arrives clean, and 25 Mbit/s is far more data than the FLV1 encoder needs. What is strange is the destination: you are taking a high-bitrate archival master and putting it into a format nothing plays. Keep the .dv file — it is the version worth preserving — and treat the SWF as a derivative for one specific system.
Dramatically, because DV is barely compressed by modern standards. An hour of DV tape is roughly 13 GB; the same footage as FLV1 inside a SWF is a small fraction of that. In our testing a 4-second capture of 14.3 MB came out at 1.22 MB. That is not a free win — the reduction is mostly the FLV1 encoder discarding detail DV preserved — but it does mean the SWF will be far more manageable than the source.
No. Adobe publishes only a partial specification of the format, and it was last updated in January 2013 to cover SWF version 19. Nothing has been revised since, consistent with Flash's end of life. It remains documented well enough for emulators like Ruffle and for tools such as FFmpeg to read and write older SWF files, but it is a frozen format and should be treated as one.
Yes, and it is usually what people actually need. SWF to MP4 turns a legacy Flash file into an H.264 video that plays in current browsers and on phones without any emulator. If you have inherited a folder of .swf files you cannot open, that conversion is the practical first move.
Something current and widely decodable. DV to MP4 gives you an H.264 file that plays essentially everywhere at a fraction of the tape's size, and DV to MKV is the better pick when you want multiple audio tracks or chapters. Whichever you choose, keep the original .dv capture if storage allows — it is the closest thing to the tape itself, and every conversion after it is a fresh lossy generation.
Your .dv capture is uploaded over an encrypted connection, converted on our servers, and both it and the SWF are deleted automatically a few hours later. Because DV runs at 25 Mbit/s, the upload is the slow part of this job by a wide margin — trimming to the section you need with the Trim control before converting saves more time than any other setting on the page.
