Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I create a RAR file for free on my desktop?
The RAR compression algorithm is proprietary to RARLAB. Its license explicitly forbids using the public UnRAR source code to re-create the RAR compression algorithm, so free tools like 7-Zip and PeaZip can only extract .rar files, not make them. WinRAR (around $29) is the only desktop app that creates RAR archives. An online converter is the practical free path to a genuine .rar.
Can Windows 11 make RAR files without this tool?
No. Windows 11 added native archive extraction for RAR, 7z, and TAR in the KB5031455 update on October 31, 2023, so File Explorer can open .rar files. That update is decompression only — Windows still cannot create RAR archives, and it does not handle encrypted RAR archives natively.
Does archiving to RAR change or compress my file's contents?
No. RAR is a lossless container: every byte of your original file is preserved and restored exactly on extraction. Archiving may reduce the stored size, but already-compressed files such as JPEG, MP4, or MP3 shrink very little because their data is near-incompressible. Documents, text, and uncompressed data compress the most.
Should I pick Single Archive or Individual Archives?
Choose Single Archive when you want one .rar bundling everything — best for sending a project or set of files as a single download. Choose Individual Archives when each file should stay separate, for example wrapping several large files that recipients will pull down independently.
Will a RAR file be smaller than a ZIP of the same files?
Usually slightly, yes. RAR's proprietary algorithm typically compresses better than ZIP's older DEFLATE, while 7z's LZMA2 usually beats both. In our testing, a folder of mixed text and documents packed noticeably tighter as RAR or 7z than as ZIP, but for photos and video the three formats land within a few percent of each other because that data is already compressed.
What happens to my file after I convert it?
It is uploaded over an encrypted (TLS) connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours. There is no sign-up, no watermark, and your files are never shared or made public. If you only need maximum compatibility, convert to ZIP instead — every modern OS opens ZIP with no extra software.
