A HEIF file is a still photograph and DivX is a video format, so this conversion is not a re-save — it builds a short, silent video that holds your single frame on screen for a duration you choose. People reach for it when a DivX-era set-top box, an AVI-only editing timeline, or some other legacy pipeline refuses to accept an image but will happily play a movie file. This page explains exactly what lands inside the .divx, because that detail decides whether an old player will accept it.

The video inside is genuine MPEG-4 Part 2 — the same family DivX has always used — but it is tagged with the FourCC FMP4 rather than the DIVX or DX50 tags that DivX-branded encoders stamped into AVI headers. Software players ignore the tag and decode the stream regardless, which is why VLC, mpv, and any FFmpeg-based tool open it without complaint. Some strict hardware decoders match on the FourCC before they will even attempt playback. If a certified player rejects the file, that mismatch is the first thing to suspect, and re-tagging the AVI header with a desktop tool is the usual fix.
Because there is nothing to make sound from. A HEIF is a single still photograph with no audio stream, and this page therefore shows no Audio Codec control at all — an image source deliberately produces a video with no audio track. That is expected behaviour for every image-to-video conversion here, not a missing-audio bug. To add music or narration, bring the clip into a video editor afterwards.
They overlap heavily. DivX began as a consumer-branded implementation of MPEG-4 Part 2, the video standard also known as MPEG-4 Visual or ASP; Xvid is an open-source implementation of the same standard. Files from all three are broadly interchangeable at the codec level, which is why one player usually handles the lot. None of them is MPEG-4 Part 10 — that is H.264, a much newer and more efficient codec, and it is what MP4 files normally carry.
Yes, some. HEIF stores the photo with HEVC compression, which is roughly two generations more efficient than MPEG-4 Part 2. Re-encoding through the older codec softens fine detail and can band smooth gradients, most visibly in skies and skin tones. Keeping the Quality Preset at "Very High" and leaving Video resolution on "Keep original" gets you as close to the source as this codec allows. For a pixel-faithful copy of the picture, stay in the image world and use HEIF to PNG, which is lossless.
Up to a point. Before the video encode runs, every image is normalised into a clean PNG and clamped so neither side exceeds 4096 pixels, because the frame-import stage becomes unreliable above that. A 48-megapixel capture is therefore scaled to fit 4096 on its long edge. That is still above 4K, so it is invisible in playback, but it does mean a .divx is the wrong place to preserve a high-megapixel original.
Choose DivX only when the destination is a legacy DivX-certified player, an old set-top box, or an AVI-based workflow that will not take anything newer. For every current destination — phones, browsers, smart TVs, modern editors — HEIF to MP4 is the better answer, because H.264 in MP4 plays essentially everywhere and compresses far better at the same visual quality. If you already have a .divx and need it modernised, DivX to MP4 handles the reverse trip.
That is the Background Color filling the part of the frame your photo does not cover, and it defaults to White for image sources. A portrait phone photo inside a landscape frame will always show this. Change the colour to Black or any of the other named options, or choose a Fixed Resolution whose aspect ratio matches the photo so there is nothing to fill.
The recurring cases are narrow but real: dropping a still onto an AVI-based editing timeline that rejects image imports, building a title or placeholder card an old media player will loop, or feeding a device that reads video files only. If your actual goal is just to see the photo on a Windows PC or a non-Safari browser — where HEIF has no native rendering — convert to HEIF to JPG instead and skip video entirely.
