This guide walks through pulling one exact frame out of that stream and saving it as a TIF: a lossless, archival-grade raster you can take into Photoshop, a print shop, or a codec-QA comparison without re-compressing a single pixel.

.hevc file at all" — That is expected. A raw .hevc stream has no container, so most players reject it; extraction decodes the bitstream directly on our servers, independently of any player. To make the stream itself playable, wrap it first with HEVC to MP4..tif files (one image per file), not as a single multi-page TIFF..hevc capture may lack a valid stream header. Re-export the file from the encoder or recorder and try again.This tool expects a genuine raw H.265 elementary stream. If your file is actually an MP4 or MOV with an HEVC track that was renamed to .hevc, it already has a container — extract from the original instead. If you need to preserve true HDR dynamic range in 16-bit linear TIF, that is a desktop-tool job (DaVinci Resolve, or FFmpeg with -pix_fmt rgb48le); HDR frames here are tone-mapped to standard dynamic range so they look right on an ordinary display. And a corrupt or DRM-protected stream cannot be decoded by any tool until the underlying file is repaired or the protection removed at the source.

.hevc file at a specific timestamp?Use Specific Frame mode and type the time into Time (seconds) with millisecond precision — 12.450 means 12 seconds and 450 milliseconds into the bitstream. The output is a single .tif at the resolution you choose. This is the mode for grabbing a golden reference frame from a codec test stream, one scene from a clip, or a precise still for archival.
LZW is lossless — its decoded pixels are mathematically identical to uncompressed — and for an 8-bit photographic frame it typically shrinks the file by 30–50% while staying readable in essentially every TIFF app (Photoshop, Affinity, GIMP, ImageMagick, Preview). Pick None (uncompressed) only for the absolute safest long-term archival master, or if an unusual downstream tool struggles with compressed TIF. For 16-bit sources, try ZIP (Deflate), which usually packs high-bit-depth data tighter than LZW.
TIF is one of the few common raster formats that natively carries 16-bit-per-channel data, so it has the headroom to hold a 10-bit HEVC source far better than an 8-bit format like JPEG. On extraction here, HDR (HDR10 / Dolby Vision) frames are tone-mapped to standard dynamic range so they display correctly on an ordinary monitor — they are not stored as full HDR. For a true 16-bit linear HDR archive, export with a desktop tool such as DaVinci Resolve or FFmpeg's rgb48le pixel format instead.
National libraries, museums, and standards bodies standardized on TIFF because its specification is open and mature — Adobe's TIFF 6.0 dates to June 1992 and is still the active version — and it supports lossless compression, rich metadata, and 8/16/32-bit channels including CMYK for print. 1 PNG is also lossless but is web/RGB-oriented and lacks CMYK and TIFF's tag ecosystem; JPEG is lossy and unsuitable for a master. For a frame destined for print, color analysis, or evidence, TIF preserves the most.
No — .tif and .tiff are the same Tagged Image File Format with two spellings of the extension; the three-letter .tif survives from older 8.3 filename limits, and the four-letter .tiff is identical byte-for-byte. This page outputs .tif; if you specifically need the .tiff extension, use HEVC to TIFF. Either way you can change the File extension option to match what your downstream tool expects.
In our testing, a single 2160p frame extracted from a 4K H.265 stream landed around 25–35 MB as uncompressed TIF and roughly 10–18 MB once Compression Type was set to LZW, with the LZW and uncompressed pixels identical under comparison. Because every extracted frame becomes a full raster, pull only the timestamps you actually need rather than running Multiple Screenshots across a long clip.
.hevc file extension, exactly?It is a raw H.265 video bitstream — MPEG-H Part 2 — with no container wrapped around it.
