How to Convert MOS to MPEG-2

Why This Conversion Loses Some of the RAW

A Leaf MOS holds 16-bit linear sensor data with far more tonal range than any 8-bit video frame can display. During conversion the RAW is demosaiced and tone-mapped down to MPEG-2's 8-bit, 4:2:0 frame, so highlight and shadow latitude that you would normally recover in Capture One is baked in permanently. MPEG-2 is also older and less efficient than H.264/AVC or H.265/HEVC, so the file is larger than a modern codec would produce at the same quality. Because of this, MPEG-2 is worth choosing only when a downstream tool specifically needs it — DVD authoring or an MPEG-2 timeline. For everything else, exporting the RAW to a high-quality image preserves more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the MPEG-2 file I get be a playable DVD?

No. This produces a bare .mpeg2 elementary/program stream, not a finished disc. A DVD-Video disc needs a VIDEO_TS folder with IFO/BUP navigation files and the video remuxed into VOB. Use this output as the source you feed into DVD-authoring software, or convert MOS to VOB (MOS to VOB) to get the DVD container directly.

Does the MPEG-2 clip have sound?

No. A MOS file is a single still image with no audio track, so the resulting clip is silent. The tool simply holds your frame on screen for the duration you set; there is nothing to encode an audio stream from.

Why convert a RAW photo to video at all instead of an image?

The only practical reasons are DVD-Video authoring and dropping a still onto an MPEG-2 editing timeline that expects video, not images. If you just want a shareable, viewable photo, convert to a standard image instead — MOS to JPG for a small file or MOS to PNG for lossless quality.
