How to Convert MXF to ICO

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my MXF frame look so low-detail as an ICO?
Because ICO tops out at 256 × 256 pixels. A 1080p or 4K MXF frame is downscaled hard to fit an icon, so fine detail is lost by design. ICO is meant for crisp app and folder icons, not for keeping a high-resolution still — if you want the full frame, convert to MXF to PNG instead.
How do I choose which frame becomes the icon?
Use the Time (seconds) field under Frame Selection with "Specific Frame" selected. The value is seconds with optional milliseconds — 0 grabs the first frame, 2.100 grabs 2.1 seconds in. Pick a moment with a clear, centered subject, since busy frames turn to mush at icon size.
Will the ICO keep transparency from the video?
A decoded MXF frame is fully opaque, so the icon won't have a transparent background unless the source frame already had one (most broadcast video doesn't). The ICO format itself supports 32-bit alpha transparency — but the converter can only carry through what's in the frame it grabs.
Does this output a single icon or an animation?
A single still icon. ICO is a static image container, so the output is one frame written as a .ico — there's no animation. If you want motion from your MXF, convert to MXF to GIF or MXF to MP4 instead.
What size should I pick for a favicon versus a desktop icon?
For a website favicon, 32 px is the practical sweet spot (browsers also use 16 px). For Windows app or folder icons, 256 px gives the sharpest result on high-DPI displays and scales down cleanly. In our testing, a 1080p MXF frame written at 256 px produced a clean icon a few kilobytes in size, while 16 px loses almost all of the original detail.
