You have a Nikon .nef RAW file and something downstream is asking for a .jfif. This walk-through renders the RAW into a viewable image and explains the one thing most people miss: a .jfif is just an ordinary JPEG with an unusual extension, so for almost everyone NEF to JPG is the same result under a more familiar name. Convert to .jfif here only when a specific program or upload form names that extension.

Whatever you pick, keep the original .nef as your master — the RAW latitude is gone once it is flattened to JPEG.
.jpg and .jpeg. The file is already a valid JPEG, so just rename .jfif to .jpg; it opens identically with no re-encode and no quality loss. (This is also why most people should use NEF to JPG and skip the rename.).jfif extension by default, which surprised a lot of users. It is the same image format; the extension just changed..nef; export JFIF only as a deliverable.If your tool needs a lossless, high-bit-depth file for further heavy editing, JFIF is the wrong target — it is 8-bit and lossy. Export a NEF to TIFF instead, which holds far more of the RAW's tonal range. Likewise, a corrupted or partially written .nef (interrupted card transfer, formatting error) may fail to render at all; re-copy it from the camera card before converting. And if you only ever needed a viewable picture under a normal name, there is no reason to produce a .jfif at all — NEF to JPG gives you the identical image with the extension every program already recognizes.
Yes. JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is the standard wrapper that holds ordinary JPEG-compressed image data, identified by an APP0 marker right after the image's Start-Of-Image marker and formalized as ITU-T T.871 (May 2011) and ISO/IEC 10918-5 (2013). The pixel data in a .jfif is identical to what a .jpg would contain, so you can rename .jfif to .jpg and any tool that opens JPEGs will open it — no re-encoding, no quality loss.
The output image is the same either way; only the extension differs. Convert to JFIF when a specific program, upload form, or workflow names .jfif explicitly and rejects other extensions. If nothing in your toolchain insists on it, use NEF to JPG — it is the more widely recognized name for the exact same file.
Some loss is unavoidable. A NEF stores 12- or 14-bit linear RAW data and JFIF (JPEG) is 8-bit and lossy, so the render bakes in white balance, exposure, and your Picture Control look, then compresses. At the Very High or Highest preset the visible loss is hard to spot at normal viewing or print sizes; what you give up is the ability to recover heavy under/overexposure or re-pick white balance later. Keep the original NEF as your master.
Yes, by default. With Keep original selected the JFIF is rendered at the NEF's native pixel dimensions, so a 20-45 MP Nikon sensor produces a full-resolution JPEG. This is a still-image render, not a video frame grab, so there is no forced downscale. Use Resolution Percentage or Preset Resolutions only when you deliberately want a smaller copy for web or email.
No. JFIF is 8-bit and lossy, the wrong target for archiving or heavy further editing. For a lossless, higher-bit-depth render that holds more of the NEF's tonal latitude, convert to NEF to TIFF instead. Reserve JFIF (or JPG) for the shareable, view-anywhere copy and keep the NEF itself as your true negative.
