NEF is Nikon Electronic Format — the raw sensor data a Nikon DSLR or mirrorless body writes instead of a finished picture. JFIF is the file format that ordinary JPEGs are stored in, standardised as ITU-T T.871 | ISO/IEC 10918-5. This page renders the raw file into a normal 8-bit JPEG and names it .jfif, which is the exact same image data a .jpg would contain — only the extension differs. If nothing downstream specifically demands the .jfif spelling, NEF to JPG gives you the identical result under the name every application recognises.

That two-stage render is why even "Highest" is not bit-identical to the sensor data — JPEG is lossy at every setting, and 12- or 14-bit raw values are being squeezed into 8 bits per channel.

Keep the original .nef as your master whichever rung you pick. The highlight and shadow latitude that makes a raw file worth shooting does not survive the flattening to 8-bit JPEG, and no later edit brings it back.
Not in any way that affects the image. JFIF is the container specification for JPEG-compressed data, and a .jpg file that carries a JFIF APP0 segment is already a JFIF file — the two extensions name the same bytes. ITU-T T.871 exists precisely to formalise that layout. If an application rejects .jfif, renaming it to .jpg is enough; no re-encode is involved and nothing is lost in the rename.
Because the software is naming the file after the internal format it detects rather than after the extension people expect. When a saved JPEG carries the JFIF APP0 marker, some Windows builds and browser versions write .jfif instead of .jpg. It surprises people, but nothing about the picture changed. That confusion is the main reason this conversion gets searched for at all.
No. JFIF is defined for one or three colour channels at 8 bits per channel, so a 12-bit or 14-bit Nikon raw file is reduced to 8 bits per channel on the way out. That is a roughly 16-fold to 64-fold reduction in tonal steps per channel. The visible result is usually fine for a finished picture; what you lose is the room to push exposure and recover highlights afterwards.
Not necessarily. A NEF stores white balance, hue, tone and sharpening as instruction sets rather than as pixels, and a raw editor shows you its own interpretation of those instructions. This converter applies a neutral standard render instead of reproducing a camera-maker picture profile. If you need a specific look, develop the NEF in your editor, export a TIFF or PNG, and convert that file instead.
Yes. Switch File Compression from "Quality Preset" to "Specific file size" and enter your ceiling — the field opens at 8 MB and the unit dropdown offers Bytes, Kilobytes and Megabytes. There is also an Auto Scale toggle in that group, which lets the converter reduce pixel dimensions as well as quality when the target is too tight for a full-resolution frame to reach by compression alone.
Treat metadata as something to verify rather than assume. A JFIF file can carry EXIF alongside the JFIF APP0 segment, but re-encoding pipelines commonly strip application segments to save bytes, and camera-maker maker-notes in particular rarely survive any raw conversion. If shooting data matters to you, keep the .nef — the original always has the complete record.
Almost always, and by a wide margin. A Nikon raw file stores 12 or 14 bits per photosite for the whole sensor with little or no compression, while JFIF stores an 8-bit, three-channel, lossy approximation. Even at the Highest preset the JPEG is typically a fraction of the raw file. If you want the size reduction without the JPEG artefacts, NEF to PNG is lossless but usually produces a much larger file than a JPEG.
