Frequently Asked Questions
Will I lose image quality converting PEF to JPEG?
You lose editing latitude, not necessarily visible quality. The PEF holds 12- or 14-bit RAW data, so you can recover highlights, push shadows, and reset white balance after the fact. Rendering to JPEG bakes those decisions in and quantizes the result to 8 bits per channel using lossy compression. At a high Quality Preset a properly-exposed shot looks excellent; the limitation only shows if you later try to heavily re-edit the JPEG.
Should I convert PEF to JPEG or keep the RAW?
Keep the PEF as your master and treat the JPEG as a deliverable. JPEG is the right choice when you need to share, post, email, or print a photo and don't intend to re-grade it. The RAW is worth keeping for any image you might want to re-process later, because that headroom cannot be rebuilt from the JPEG.
What is the difference between PEF and DNG on a Pentax camera?
Both are RAW and carry the same sensor data; the difference is packaging. PEF is Pentax's proprietary format and often needs a software update before a brand-new camera body is supported. DNG is Adobe's open, TIFF-based standard that most editors read without waiting on an update. Pentax bodies let you shoot either — if long-term openness matters, DNG is the safer archive. Why can't I open my PEF file in Windows Photos or a browser?
PEF is camera RAW, not a finished image, so general-purpose viewers and browsers can't decode it without a vendor RAW codec. That is exactly why converting to JPEG is useful: the output opens anywhere — Photos, Preview, any browser, any phone — with nothing extra installed.
Does the converted JPEG keep my EXIF and camera settings?
Standard shooting metadata such as camera model, lens, exposure, ISO, and date is carried into the JPEG's EXIF where present. The RAW-only data — the unprocessed mosaic, the embedded tone curve, and the editing headroom — is consumed during rendering and is not retained, since a JPEG has no place to store it.
Can I convert several PEF files at once?

How big will the JPEG be compared to the PEF?
Much smaller. A PEF holds full RAW sensor data, so converting to a compressed 8-bit JPEG typically cuts file size dramatically. In our testing, a 24-megapixel PEF rendered at the "Very High" preset produced a JPEG only a fraction of the RAW's size while staying visually clean.
