PPM (Portable Pixmap) is a simple, uncompressed still image — a raw grid of RGB pixels with no animation. DivX is a lossy video codec. So this conversion does not change one image into another image: it wraps your single PPM picture in a short, silent DivX video clip that displays that one frame for a set number of seconds. Use it when you need a still to play inside a video editor, a DVD-era media player, or any pipeline that expects a .divx/AVI file rather than an image.

How to Convert PPM to DivX

When DivX Is the Wrong Target
DivX is a dated codec. If you just want a shareable clip of a single picture that plays everywhere — phones, browsers, social apps — convert PPM to MP4 instead, since H.264 in an MP4 container is far more universally supported than DivX. And if you don't actually need a video at all and only want a normal, viewable still image, convert PPM to PNG for a lossless, widely compatible picture.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does converting a PPM to DivX add any audio?
No. A PPM is a still image with no sound, so the resulting DivX clip is silent. There is no audio track to add or configure — the output is purely the displayed image for the duration you set.
Will the DivX video animate or move?
No. A single PPM contains one frame, so the clip simply shows that one picture for the chosen duration. If you upload multiple PPM stills and choose "Merge images," they play back-to-back like a slideshow, but each still is held static.
How long will the output clip be?
It equals the Image Duration you select multiplied by the number of stills (when merging). A single image at the default duration produces a short clip; raise the per-frame seconds to make it longer, up to 10 seconds per image.
Does the conversion lose quality compared to the PPM?
PPM is uncompressed, and DivX is a lossy codec, so the encode discards some detail to compress the frame. Keeping the Quality Preset at Very High and matching the output resolution to your image keeps the visible difference small. For a lossless still instead, convert to PNG rather than to a video.
Why pick DivX over MP4 for a still image?
Usually you shouldn't. DivX makes sense only when a specific legacy editor or older hardware player expects a DivX/Xvid AVI. In our testing, the same PPM exported to MP4 (H.264) played on more devices out of the box; MP4 is the better default for sharing a clip of a picture.
Can I set the clip's resolution and fill the padding with a color?
Yes. Under resolution you can keep the image's original size or pick a fixed preset such as 1920x1080. When the picture's shape doesn't match the chosen frame, the Background Color (White by default) fills the letterbox or pillarbox padding, so the still keeps its aspect ratio instead of being stretched.
Why is my PPM file so much larger than a JPEG or PNG?
PPM stores raw, uncompressed RGB — three bytes for every pixel with no compression at all — so even a modest image can run to several megabytes. JPEG and PNG apply compression, which is why they are far smaller on disk. That large raw size is normal for the Netpbm family and does not affect the DivX output, since the encoder re-compresses the frame regardless.
