RMVB (RealMedia Variable Bitrate) is a dead-end RealNetworks format from the early-2000s download era, locked to proprietary RealVideo and RealAudio codecs that modern phones, browsers, and TVs no longer decode. Converting to HEVC (H.265) re-encodes that legacy video with a current, efficient codec, so a clip stuck in a Real-only file becomes a small modern-codec stream. It is a genuine rescue out of an abandoned format — but it cannot add detail that was never recorded, so a low-resolution RMVB stays low-resolution, just smaller and in a codec today's tools understand.

The output is a .hevc file that is actually a Matroska (MKV) container with the video codec fixed to H.265 — only the extension is unusual. Two consequences matter for an RMVB rescue:
.hevc file plays like an MKV — but only where MKV plays. VLC, mpv, and other Matroska-capable players open it directly, audio and seeking included; renaming it to .mkv helps software that goes by extension. QuickTime and most stock phone and TV apps do not support Matroska at all, so for a file that plays everywhere see RMVB to MP4 (H.264 in MP4, the safest target for universal playback) or RMVB to MKV, and pick the H.265 codec if you specifically want HEVC with the standard extension..rmvb file or click "+ Add Files." You can queue several files and convert them with the same settings..hevc output. Leave the "Very High" Quality Preset for a faithful result, or switch to Constant Quality (CRF), Constant/Variable Bitrate, or Specific file size for finer control..hevc file. RMVB files from the download era were usually low-resolution and low-bitrate by design, built to keep downloads small. It is re-encoded, not dropped. The converter decodes the RealAudio stream (commonly the Cook codec) and re-encodes it to AAC by default in the .hevc output; AC3, MP3, and Opus are also available under the Audio Codec dropdown. The video is decoded from RealVideo and re-encoded to H.265, so the whole file is a true transcode rather than a container swap.
.hevc file instead of an MP4?Despite the extension, the .hevc file is a Matroska (MKV) container carrying the new H.265 stream and your audio — renaming it to .mkv makes that explicit for software that goes by extension. MKV-capable players like VLC and mpv open it directly with working seek. QuickTime and most stock phone and TV apps do not support Matroska, though, so if you want a single file that plays everywhere, convert with RMVB to MP4 or RMVB to MKV.
For a legacy RMVB you simply want to watch anywhere, RMVB to MP4 with H.264 is the safer rescue target — H.264 in an MP4 container plays on essentially every modern browser and device, and the result is a normal file with audio. Choose HEVC when you want the smallest modern-codec file and your playback tools handle H.265 in a Matroska container. HEVC also encodes more slowly and carries patent baggage that H.264 has largely shed.
RealVideo and RealAudio are proprietary RealNetworks codecs that mainstream platforms never adopted. After RealNetworks sold its patents and next-generation codec software to Intel in 2012, the format's ecosystem wound down, and today's devices ship with decoders for H.264, H.265, and AAC — not RV40 or Cook. That mismatch is exactly why re-encoding to a modern codec fixes playback.
It varies, and the gain is often modest for these files. HEVC is designed to be roughly 25-50% smaller than H.264 at the same quality, but RMVB was already a compact, low-bitrate format built for small downloads, so there is less fat to trim than when re-encoding a large modern H.264 source. In our testing, re-encoding a low-bitrate RMVB at the default quality preset produced a similar-or-smaller file rather than a dramatic drop — the real value is escaping the dead Real codecs, not shaving bytes.

HEVC (H.265) is deliberately more CPU-intensive to encode than H.264 — it analyzes larger, variable-sized coding blocks and runs more thorough motion prediction to reach its efficiency, so the encode step is markedly slower for the same clip. The work happens on our servers rather than on your device, so it never taxes your machine; a longer or higher-resolution RMVB simply takes more time to finish. That extra cost is the price of the smaller, modern-codec file HEVC is known for.
