Some schools use a 7-point scale (A 93+, B 85-92, C 77-84, D 70-76, F below 70), most often in pre-2010 high school transcripts and in some southern US public school districts. UNC-Chapel Hill, for example, used a 7-point scale until 2007 before switching to the 10-point standard.

Unweighted GPA uses a flat 4.0 scale — an A is 4.0 whether it's earned in AP Calculus or in a regular elective. Weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder courses, typically +1.0 for AP and IB, +0.5 for Honors, so an A in AP becomes 5.0 and an A in Honors becomes 4.5. The weighted scale lets a student who takes a rigorous course load post a GPA above 4.0 — some high school transcripts show weighted GPAs as high as 4.7 or 4.8. There's no national standard, though: districts set their own bonus amounts, and many colleges recalculate applicants' GPAs to a common internal scale during admissions so they can compare students from schools with different weighting policies.
