Downscaling preserves quality well because you're discarding pixels, not compressing tonal data — a 4000 × 3000 photo resized to 1600 × 1200 looks identical on a phone screen. However, JPG always re-encodes on save, which adds one round of lossy compression. Keep the quality preset at High or Highest (roughly 85-95%) to make that re-encode invisible. Upscaling (making the image larger than the original) interpolates new pixels and softens detail — there's no way around it without AI upscalers.
Instagram displays square feed posts at 1080 × 1080 px, portrait 4:5 posts at 1080 × 1350 px (the most engagement-favored shape since the 2024 grid redesign), and Stories/Reels at 1080 × 1920 px. Anything larger gets re-compressed by Instagram on upload; anything smaller looks soft on Retina screens. 1080 px on the short side is the sweet spot.
For online passport renewal and visa applications, the State Department's Digital Image Requirements specify a square JPG between 600 × 600 px and 1200 × 1200 px, sRGB at 24 bits per pixel, and 240 KB or less. The physical equivalent is 2 × 2 inches at 300 DPI (= 600 × 600 px). Crop to square first so the head meets the 1 to 1 3/8 inch (25-35 mm) chin-to-crown rule, then resize and check the file size before uploading.
Resize scales every pixel of the image — the entire scene stays in frame, just smaller (or larger). Crop removes pixels from the edges — content gets trimmed away to change the shape or focus. A 4000 × 3000 photo resized to 1500 × 1125 still shows the whole scene; cropped to 1500 × 1500 it loses the sides to become a square.
Turn on the aspect-ratio lock and enter only one dimension — the other auto-fills proportionally. For example, with a 4000 × 3000 source (4:3 ratio), entering a width of 1600 auto-sets height to 1200. Disabling the lock lets you stretch to arbitrary dimensions, which distorts faces and logos and is almost never what you want.

DPI only matters for print; on-screen, the browser ignores it and renders by pixel count. Use 72 or 96 DPI for web and social media (the historical screen defaults), 300 DPI for photo prints and most professional printing, and 600 DPI for fine-art reproduction or archival scans. Changing DPI without changing pixel count just relabels the print size — it doesn't add detail.
