This tool shrinks an AC3 file — the Dolby Digital audio format used on DVDs, Blu-rays, and home-theater soundtracks — by re-encoding it at a lower bitrate, a leaner channel layout, or both. AC3 is lossy to begin with, so compression here is a lossy-to-lossy re-encode: done with sensible settings, the difference is inaudible on typical gear, but there is no way to shrink the file without re-encoding it. Files upload over an encrypted connection, are processed on our servers, and are deleted automatically after a few hours — no sign-up, no watermark.

An AC3 file's size is bitrate × duration, so the honest levers are exactly two: fewer bits per second, or fewer seconds.

It re-encodes a lossy format, so some loss is inherent — the question is audibility. Folding 5.1 to stereo and keeping a healthy stereo bitrate is usually indistinguishable on TVs, soundbars, and headphones; crushing the bitrate far below the source is where music turns swishy and dialogue dulls. Compress in one step from the original rather than repeatedly re-compressing outputs, since each lossy generation stacks.
It depends on the source. A 448 kbps 5.1 DVD soundtrack folded to 192 kbps stereo drops to well under half size; a track already at a low stereo bitrate has little left to give without audible damage. The File Size Percentage slider makes the trade explicit — and trimming dead air shrinks the file with no quality cost at all.
Only if you leave Audio Channel on Original. Choosing Stereo or Mono folds the surround mix down — that's precisely why it saves so much space. Keep Original when the file feeds an AV receiver that decodes 5.1; fold down when the destination is a phone, laptop, or stereo system that would downmix it anyway.
Because it was mastered for home theater: six channels at 384–448 kbps for a feature-length film adds up fast. That bitrate buys headroom an AV receiver uses; a phone or laptop playing the same file through two small speakers gets no benefit from it, which is why fold-down plus a lower bitrate is usually a free win for portable use.
Compress when the destination expects AC3 — disc-authoring workflows, AV receivers, players that passthrough Dolby Digital. Convert when it doesn't: AC3 to AAC is more efficient at the same quality, and AC3 to MP3 maximizes compatibility. The AC3 converter hub lists every direction.
If you only need a section, trim it: the Trim control exports just the start time and duration you set, and Trim AC3 puts that workflow front and center. The cut range is re-encoded on the way out, but the parts you drop cost nothing — for pulling one scene's audio out of a film-length track, that beats any bitrate setting.
Original, almost always. AC3 sources are typically 48 kHz, and resampling buys little size at real quality risk — sample rate is a much weaker lever than bitrate or channels. Change it only when a specific device or pipeline documents a required rate.
