F4V is Adobe's Flash-era video container — an ISO MP4-family file that wraps an H.264 video stream and AAC audio. Because those are the same codecs modern players use, an F4V is easy to shrink by re-encoding the video at a lower bitrate or target size. This tool does exactly that on our servers, then hands back a smaller F4V. If your goal is compatibility rather than size, converting to plain MP4 is usually the better move — same codecs, far wider device support.
F4V ("Flash MP4 Video") was introduced in December 2007 with Flash Player 9 Update 3 to carry H.264/AAC content that the older FLV format could not. Despite the Flash branding, an F4V is structurally an MP4: it is built on the ISO base media file format (MPEG-4 Part 12) and organized into the same ftyp/moov/mdat boxes as a .mp4. That is why F4V files still open today in VLC and other ffmpeg-based players even though Adobe Flash Player itself reached end-of-life on December 31, 2020.

These three Adobe formats are often lumped together, but they behave very differently once Flash is gone. F4V and FLV are real video containers you can still play; SWF is a program/animation format that needs the discontinued Flash runtime to run at all. Compressing or converting a SWF is not the same job — there is no plain video stream to re-encode.

Compressing to F4V keeps the extension your workflow expects, which matters if a legacy player or archive tool specifically requires .f4v. But F4V is a niche container: many phones, editors, and web players that happily read the identical H.264/AAC payload inside an MP4 will refuse the F4V wrapper. If you are shrinking the file to share or upload it, run F4V to MP4 instead — you get the same size reduction plus broad compatibility. For batch jobs across mixed formats, the general Video Compressor set to "Same as source" avoids accidental format changes. Either way, the tool re-encodes the H.264 video to reach the target — it does not simply copy the original stream, so expect a normal encode-time quality/size tradeoff.
Some, because compression re-encodes the H.264 video rather than copying it. In our testing, leaving the default "Target file size (%)" at 80% re-encodes with no visible drop on typical Flash-era 480p and 720p clips; push the target toward 40-50% when you need a bigger reduction and expect softer detail and blockier motion. Using "Constant Quality" (CRF) instead lets you fix a perceptual quality level and let the file size fall where it may.
If the goal is a smaller file to send or upload, convert to MP4. F4V and MP4 hold the same H.264/AAC data, but MP4 is accepted almost everywhere while F4V is not, so you gain compatibility at no quality cost. Only stay on F4V when a specific legacy player or pipeline demands the .f4v extension.
Most likely you are trying to open it in a browser or a tool that expected Flash Player, which Adobe discontinued on December 31, 2020 and began blocking on January 12, 2021. The file itself is fine — because F4V is MP4-family, it opens in VLC and other ffmpeg-based players. This is the key difference from a .swf, which cannot play without the dead Flash runtime.
FLV (2003) is the original Flash Video format, a tag-based stream that carries Sorenson Spark or On2 VP6 video with MP3 audio. F4V (2007) was Adobe's replacement built on the ISO MP4 container to carry H.264 and AAC. F4V is the more modern, standards-based file; both can be re-wrapped or re-encoded to MP4 today.
It re-encodes. To hit a smaller target size or a chosen quality level, the H.264 video stream is decoded and encoded again at new settings — it is not a lossless remux that copies the existing frames. That is why the output is smaller than a simple container swap and why the quality setting you pick matters.
Almost always H.264 (AVC) video and AAC audio — that combination is exactly what the F4V specification was created to carry, and it is why the file plays in modern H.264-capable players. The compressor keeps H.264/AAC by default so the output stays a valid F4V.
As small as your quality tolerance allows. Choose "Specific file size" to enter an exact MB target and the encoder scales bitrate to match; very aggressive targets on longer clips force low bitrates that pixelate motion. For a predictable balance, start from the default percentage target or a moderate CRF and lower the resolution preset only if you still need more.
