OGA is the audio-only profile of the royalty-free Ogg container, and most .oga files are lossy Vorbis, so shrinking one means re-encoding — not re-packing. This compressor lets you hit an exact file size, a target percentage, or a specific bitrate while keeping the file open-source and Ogg-native, instead of forcing you into MP3. Because Vorbis is lossy, always compress from the highest-quality source you have: a second lossy pass discards more audio and never restores detail.

The File Size Percentage method needs a lossy codec — it is hidden when you set the codec to FLAC, since a lossless target has no fixed compression ratio to aim at.
.oga is a general-purpose audio extension, so the codec inside decides how far a file compresses. Xiph.Org maintains the Ogg container and registered .oga with the audio/ogg MIME type in RFC 5334 (September 2008).

Switching an already-lossy Vorbis file to FLAC will not shrink it — FLAC wraps the degraded audio losslessly and usually makes the file larger. To genuinely reduce a Vorbis .oga, lower the Vorbis bitrate or re-encode to Opus, which beats Vorbis below about 96 kbps.
If the file is Vorbis, Opus, or Speex, yes — those are lossy codecs, so re-compressing discards more audio and a second lossy pass never restores detail. Keep the bitrate as high as your size target allows and compress from the highest-quality source you have. FLAC-in-Ogg is the exception: if you keep FLAC as the codec, the output stays truly lossless (but it will not get much smaller).
For spoken word, Vorbis at 96 kbps mono is effectively indistinguishable from higher rates. For music, 128–192 kbps stereo is transparent to most listeners. Below about 96 kbps, switch the codec to Opus — it holds up far better than Vorbis at low bitrates. In our testing, a 5-minute Vorbis OGA at 320 kbps (about 12 MB) re-encoded to 128 kbps VBR came out near 4.8 MB, roughly a 60% reduction with no audible loss on a podcast recording.
Both share the audio/ogg MIME type and the same Ogg container. By Xiph.Org convention since 2007, .ogg is reserved for plain Vorbis I audio so legacy hardware players that key off the extension keep working, while .oga is the general-purpose extension for any audio-only Ogg stream — Vorbis, Opus, FLAC-in-Ogg, or Speex. To compress the .ogg variant instead, use Compress OGG.
Keep Vorbis for general music and podcasts — it is the .oga default and is technically stronger than MP3 at the same bitrate. Choose Opus when you need the smallest possible file for voice or streaming, since it outperforms Vorbis and MP3 below ~96 kbps. Choose FLAC only when you need a lossless master; it will not reduce size and is the largest of the three.
Yes. Pick the Specific file size method and enter your target in MB, kB, or bytes; the encoder back-solves the bitrate to land close to that size. This is the reliable way to clear a hard attachment or upload cap without guessing at bitrates.
Android, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Linux media players all play OGA natively regardless of bitrate. iOS and Safari do not play Ogg/OGA, so for iPhone or iPad playback, convert OGA to MP3 or to AAC after compressing rather than lowering the bitrate.
There is no fixed hard cap on the audio itself. The practical limit is upload size and time: a large FLAC-in-Ogg master takes longer to send than a small Vorbis clip, and processing time scales with file length. Compressing a lower-bitrate Vorbis source uploads faster than a 24-bit lossless one.
