3G2 is the 3GPP2 mobile container that old CDMA-network phones recorded to — small, low-resolution clips wrapped around H.263, MPEG-4, or H.264 video and AMR or AAC audio. AV1 is AOMedia's royalty-free modern codec, prized for squeezing video into far fewer bytes at the same quality. Converting 3G2 to AV1 re-encodes a legacy phone clip into an efficient, web-friendly bitstream. One thing to know up front: AV1 can shrink the file and make it play in modern software, but it cannot add detail that the original low-bitrate 3G2 never captured.

You can queue several clips at once.A raw .av1 file is a video-only OBU elementary stream — the AV1 format on its own has no place to store an audio track. If your 3G2 had AMR or AAC audio and you need it back, convert to a container instead: 3G2 to MP4 or 3G2 to WebM both wrap AV1 (or another codec) alongside the audio.
No conversion can recover detail the original never recorded. 3G2 was built for extremely low-bandwidth CDMA conditions, so the source is already low-resolution and low-bitrate. AV1 makes that same footage smaller and playable in modern software, but it will not look sharper than the original.
The CDMA2000 networks 3G2 was designed for have been retired. Verizon shut down its 3G CDMA network on December 31, 2022, and other CDMA carriers wound down around the same period. Existing .3g2 files still play in software like VLC, but no current phone records them — which is exactly why people convert these legacy clips.
AV1's compression efficiency comes from a large toolset of coding decisions the encoder must evaluate, which takes more computation than older codecs like H.264. A short 3G2 clip is small, so the wait is brief, but AV1 is genuinely slower to encode than MP4. The payoff is a smaller file at the same visual quality.
Software playback is broad: Chrome 70+, Firefox 67+, and Edge support AV1, as does VLC. Hardware support is newer — many phones, TVs, and older computers cannot decode AV1 efficiently, and Safari relies on a hardware AV1 decoder. If you need maximum compatibility, an AV1-in-MP4 or H.264 MP4 is the safer choice.
