3GP to HEIC — Save the Frame as HEIC or as JPG?
This tool decodes one still frame from a 3GP video at a timestamp you choose and writes it as a HEIC image; it does not convert the clip as a whole. Because 3GP is the 3GPP mobile container that camera phones recorded to, the source is usually small and heavily compressed, which changes the usual HEIC-versus-JPG maths. Short answer: pick HEIC if the frame is going into an Apple photo library, and pick JPG if anyone else has to open it — the comparison below shows why.
HEIC vs JPG for an Extracted Video Frame
| Property | HEIC | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Container / coding | HEIF container (ISO/IEC 23008-12), HEVC-coded still | JFIF container, JPEG DCT coding |
| Standardised | 2015, MPEG-H Part 12 | 1992 (JFIF 1.02); JPEG itself 1992 |
| File size at matched quality | Roughly half the size of JPEG | Baseline |
| Colour depth | 8, 10 or 12-bit | 8-bit per channel |
| Transparency | Supported by the format | Not supported |
| Native browser rendering | Safari 17+ only | Every current browser |
| Opens on Windows untouched | No — needs the HEIF extension plus an HEVC decoder | Yes |
| Best for | Consistent, compact stills inside the Apple ecosystem | A frame anyone can open on any device |
The size advantage is real but it scales with the picture. On a full-resolution photo, halving the bytes matters; on a frame lifted from a 176×144 or 320×240 phone clip, it can be the difference between a 20 KB file and a 40 KB one — and you paid for it with compatibility.
When to Pick HEIC
- Your stills live on an iPhone, iPad or a modern Mac, where HEIC opens with no extra software and stays consistent with the rest of your photo library.
- You are extracting many frames and the aggregate storage saving is worth more than portability.
- You want the option of a 10-bit pipeline — although a low-resolution 3GP frame rarely carries enough tonal range to use it.
When to Pick JPG Instead
- The frame is going to someone whose device you do not control, or into an email, a chat thread, a document or a web page.
- You need it to render in Chrome, Firefox or Edge, none of which display HEIC.
- The clip is already low-resolution and soft, so the byte saving is a few kilobytes and not worth the friction. In that case use 3GP to JPG instead.
How to Convert 3GP to HEIC
- Upload Your 3GP File: Drag and drop your
.3gpor.3g2clip onto the page, or click "Add Files" to browse. Several clips can be queued and converted with the same settings. - Pick the Frame with Frame Selection: Leave Frame Selection on Specific Frame and set Time (seconds) to the moment you want —
2.100means 2 seconds and 100 milliseconds in. Switch to Multiple Screenshots and choose a Capture Rate if you would rather sample a series of stills across the clip. - Set Quality and Resolution (Optional): Under Image Compression, the Quality Preset defaults to Very High; drop it to shrink the file, or use Specific file size to cap the output. Leave Image resolution on Keep original so a small frame is not upscaled, or pick a Preset Resolution to scale down.
- Convert and Download: Click Convert and save your HEIC still. Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically after a few hours. No sign-up, no watermark.
What Opens a HEIC File
| Platform | Status |
|---|---|
| iOS / iPadOS 11 and later | Native — HEIC has been the default camera format since 2017 |
| macOS High Sierra and later | Native in Finder, Preview and Photos |
| Safari 17 and later (macOS and iOS) | Renders HEIC images in a page |
| Chrome, Firefox, Edge | No HEIC rendering at any version |
| Windows 10 / 11 | Needs the free HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, plus an HEVC decoder — preinstalled by many PC makers, a separate install otherwise |
| Android | Varies by vendor and gallery app; recent Samsung and Pixel devices handle HEIF, older ones do not |
| Photoshop, Affinity, GIMP | Modern versions read HEIC; older builds and many lightweight viewers do not |
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the HEIC still look sharp if my 3GP clip is low-resolution?
No — extracting a frame cannot add detail that the video never captured. 3GP was designed to fit video down a 3G link, so clips are frequently QCIF (176×144), QVGA (320×240) or CIF (352×288), with later handsets reaching VGA or 720p. The still inherits that resolution and the codec's blocking artefacts no matter which image format you save it in. Keeping Image resolution on "Keep original" at least avoids making it worse by upscaling.
Which frame do I get if I change nothing?
The very first one. Our defaults leave Frame Selection on Specific Frame with Time (seconds) at 0, so an untouched job returns frame zero of the clip. That is often a black or half-exposed frame on phone recordings, because the sensor was still settling — entering a timestamp a second or two in usually gives a far better still.
Is HEIC actually smaller than JPG for this kind of frame?
Yes, but the absolute saving is small. HEIC generally stores an image at roughly half the bytes of a quality-matched JPEG because HEVC intra-coding is far more efficient than JPEG's DCT. On a full-size photo that is a meaningful saving; on a frame from a sub-VGA phone clip both files are already tiny, so you are trading universal compatibility for a few kilobytes.
Why will not my computer open the HEIC file after downloading it?
Apple platforms open HEIC natively; almost nothing else does out of the box. On Windows you need the free HEIF Image Extensions package from the Microsoft Store, and because HEIC images are HEVC-coded, decoding also depends on an HEVC extension that some PC makers preinstall and others do not. Among browsers, only Safari 17 and later renders HEIC — Chrome, Firefox and Edge do not. If that is a problem, save the frame as JPG instead, or run an existing HEIC through HEIC to JPG.
What is the difference between .heic and .heif?
They are the same container with different labelling. HEIF (ISO/IEC 23008-12) is the file format and can hold pictures coded with HEVC, AVC, AV1 and others; the .heic extension specifically signals that the image inside is HEVC-coded, which is what Apple writes. A plain .heif file is the generic case. If you specifically want the generic extension, use 3GP to HEIF; the encoding pipeline is the same.
Does the extracted frame keep the recording date or GPS data from the 3GP?
Generally no. Timing and location data in a 3GP live in container-level boxes that describe the whole clip, not any single frame, and many older phone recordings never embedded location data at all. Treat the HEIC as a new image with its own creation time rather than a carrier of the original clip's metadata.
Can I pull several frames out of one clip in a single job?
Yes. Switch Frame Selection to Multiple Screenshots and pick a Capture Rate — the dropdown ranges from one frame every 10 seconds down to a frame every 0.1 seconds (10 fps). A dense rate on even a short clip produces a lot of images, so start at "1 second per frame" and tighten it only if you are hunting for one precise moment.
How is my 3GP handled once I upload it?
The file travels over an encrypted connection, the frame is decoded and re-encoded on our servers, and the file is deleted automatically after a few hours. There is no sign-up, no watermark, and files are never shared or made public. If you would rather cut the clip down before extracting anything, Trim 3GP shortens the upload first.
