3GP is the 3GPP mobile-phone container that wraps a video track (H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, or H.264) together with an AMR or AAC audio track. M2V is something quite different: an MPEG-2 video elementary stream with no container and no audio at all. Converting 3GP to M2V re-encodes the picture to MPEG-2 and drops the sound entirely — by design, because the .m2v format has nowhere to put an audio track. This conversion exists for DVD authoring and legacy editors that ingest separate video and audio elementary streams.
An .m2v file holds video only. When you convert a 3GP clip to M2V, the AMR or AAC audio in the original is discarded — the output is a silent MPEG-2 video stream. That is the correct behavior for the format, not a bug. If you need to keep the sound, this is the wrong target:
Choose M2V only when you specifically want a video-only elementary stream — typically because a DVD-authoring tool or NLE expects the audio supplied as a separate file.

Because the .m2v format is a video-only MPEG-2 elementary stream — it has no container to hold an audio track. Any AMR or AAC audio in the source 3GP is dropped during conversion. This is expected. If you need the audio, convert to 3GP to MPEG-2 (program stream with audio) or 3GP to MP4 instead.
M2V is meant as an authoring component, not a standalone playback file. Tools like VLC will show the silent video, and DVD-authoring software (DVDStyler, older Adobe Encore/Premiere workflows) and many non-linear editors import .m2v directly. For everyday playback with sound, convert to MP4 instead.
It can. 3GP usually carries efficient H.264 or MPEG-4 video, while M2V uses MPEG-2, which is an older, less efficient codec. Re-encoding the same picture to MPEG-2 often produces a larger video stream even though the audio is removed. In our testing, a short low-resolution 3GP clip typically grows on the video side after MPEG-2 re-encoding, partly offset by the dropped audio track.
No. 3GP recordings from early phones are low-resolution (often QCIF/CIF). Upscaling during conversion only stretches existing pixels — it cannot add detail that was never captured. Pick an output resolution at or below the source to avoid a soft, blurry result.
The video stream is encoded to MPEG-2 Video as defined by ISO/IEC 13818-2 (equivalently ITU-T H.262), the same elementary-stream coding used for DVD-Video. For a true DVD master, pair the .m2v with a separate AC-3 or LPCM audio file in your authoring tool.

For a standard-definition DVD, the target is 720×480 at 29.97 fps for NTSC or 720×576 at 25 fps for PAL — the resolution and frame rate DVD-Video expects. Set the Video resolution to the matching size before converting so your authoring tool does not have to rescale the stream. Choosing the correct standard up front avoids letterboxing or re-conforming surprises later in the DVD project.
