Higher quality settings preserve more detail but result in larger files. Lower settings reduce file size by increasing compression.

Capture a single frame at the specified time. For example, 2.100 means 2 seconds and 100 milliseconds into the video.

ASF to HEIC Converter

This tool extracts a single still frame from an ASF video and saves it as a HEIC image. ASF (Advanced Systems Format) is the Microsoft container behind .asf, .wmv, and .wma files; HEIC wraps that frame in HEVC-compressed stills inside a HEIF container. The result is a compact, high-quality grab — with the mild irony that a Microsoft-format frame ends up wrapped in a format that began life on Apple hardware.

Role Container / wrapper for synchronized media streams
Common extensions .asf, .wmv (video), .wma (audio) — same container, different labels

Status Legacy — Microsoft's own SDK is superseded by Media Foundation

HEIC Format at a Glance

Property Value
Standard ISO/IEC 23008-12 (MPEG-H Part 12, HEIF)
Finalized 2015
Image codec HEVC (H.265) — .heic is mandated for HEVC-encoded HEIF
Bit depth 8-bit, plus 10- and 12-bit for wide-gamut/HDR stills
Native browser support Safari 17+ only; not Chrome, Firefox, or Edge
Native OS support iOS 11+, macOS High Sierra+, Android 10+, Windows 11 22H2+ (Windows 10 needs the HEIF codec extension)
Best for Small file size at high quality inside the Apple ecosystem

Because native HEIC support is largely Apple-only, a HEIC grab is ideal for an iPhone, iPad, or Mac library but awkward to share with Windows or Android users who haven't installed a codec. If you need a still that opens anywhere, convert ASF to JPG or convert ASF to PNG instead — JPEG and PNG open natively on essentially every device and browser.

How to Convert ASF to HEIC

  1. Upload Your ASF File: Drag and drop your .asf, .wmv, or .wma video onto the page, or click "+ Add Files" to browse.
  2. Choose Specific Frame: Under frame selection, pick "Specific Frame" and set the "Time (seconds)" field to the moment you want — for example, 2.100 grabs the frame at two seconds and 100 milliseconds. Switch to "Multiple Screenshots" only if you want a sequence rather than one still.
  3. Set Quality Preset and Resolution: Leave "Quality Preset" at "Very High" for a near-lossless grab, or lower it to shrink the file. Use the resolution controls to keep the original size or scale down.
  4. Convert and Download: Click "Convert" and save your HEIC image. No sign-up, no watermark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this output a single still frame or an animated HEIC?

A single still by default. The "Specific Frame" mode grabs one frame at the timestamp you enter and saves it as one HEIC image. HEIF can technically hold image sequences, but this tool's standard output is one still per run — choose "Multiple Screenshots" if you want several separate stills instead.

Will the HEIC open on Windows or Android?

Not always without setup. Per caniuse, only Safari 17+ renders HEIC natively in a browser, and Windows 10 needs Microsoft's HEIF Image Extensions installed (Windows 11 22H2+ and Android 10+ are fine on supported hardware). If your recipient is on Windows or older Android, a HEIC to JPG pass — or grabbing the frame as JPG in the first place — avoids the "can't open this file" problem.

Why is the HEIC so much smaller than a JPEG of the same frame?

HEIC encodes the still with HEVC (H.265), a far newer codec than JPEG's 1990s algorithm, so it reaches similar visual quality at a smaller size. In our testing, a 1080p frame saved at the "Very High" preset typically lands well under the size of an equivalent-quality JPEG of the same frame, which is why HEIC is attractive for iPhone and iCloud libraries.

Does the ASF's WMV or VC-1 codec affect the HEIC output?

No. ASF is only the container; whether the video inside is Windows Media Video or VC-1, the frame is decoded to raw pixels first and then re-encoded as HEVC for the HEIC. The output quality depends on the source frame's resolution and your "Quality Preset" choice, not on which Windows Media codec the .asf used.

Can a 10-bit or HDR ASF frame keep its extra color depth in HEIC?

HEIC itself supports 10- and 12-bit stills, so the container can carry wide-gamut color. In practice most ASF/WMV footage is 8-bit standard-dynamic-range, so there's usually no extra depth to preserve — the grab will match the source. If your source frame is standard 8-bit, the HEIC will be 8-bit too.

Is ASF still a maintained format?

No. Microsoft last revised the ASF specification in 2004, and its Windows Media Format SDK is now a legacy feature superseded by Media Foundation's Source Reader and Sink Writer. ASF files still play and decode fine, which is exactly why pulling a frame out to a modern format like HEIC (or JPG) is a sensible way to preserve a shot from an old .asf or .wmv.

What happens to my uploaded ASF file after the conversion?

Your file is uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically a few hours after conversion. There's no sign-up, no watermark, and your files are never shared or made public.
