AV1 is the modern, royalty-free AOMedia codec (specification published 2018) built for efficient web and 4K streaming — but most standalone DVD players, older media boxes, and legacy DivX software can't decode it. Converting to DivX re-encodes the video into the MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile codec those players were certified for, delivered as DivX video with MP3 audio. This is a modern-to-legacy downconvert: the file gets larger and less efficient, and you won't regain any quality — but it plays on hardware that has never heard of AV1. No sign-up, no watermark.

Going AV1 → DivX trades efficiency for compatibility: a DivX-certified player from 2005 will happily decode the output, but the same clip will be noticeably larger than the AV1 you started with. If your goal is modern phones, smart TVs, or web playback, keep the AV1 or use AV1 to MP4 (H.264) instead — far wider support at a smaller size.
A DivX logo means the player decodes the DivX flavor of MPEG-4 Part 2 — it predates AV1 by more than a decade and has no AV1 decoder in hardware or firmware. AV1 is a completely different codec family from 2018, so a certified player will reject the file outright. Re-encoding to DivX video with MP3 audio at 720×576 or below gives the player exactly what its certification covers.
No — it usually gets larger. AV1 is one of the most efficient codecs in production, so an AV1 source is already packed tightly. DivX (MPEG-4 Part 2 ASP) is roughly two codec generations older and needs a higher bitrate to reach the same visual quality, so the DivX output is typically bigger than the AV1 input. You can cap the result with the Specific file size option, but pushing the bitrate too low on DivX shows blocking and pixelation faster than AV1 would.
Yes. DivX video is normally carried in an AVI container, so the output is a DivX-codec AVI written with a .divx extension. Certified players read the DivX/Xvid FourCC tag inside, so the file plays the same whether the extension is .divx or .avi. If your player is picky about the extension, renaming to .avi after download is harmless.
Any lossy-to-lossy re-encode loses some information, and AV1 → DivX is no exception — the DivX output inherits every artifact already in the AV1 plus whatever the new encode adds. You cannot convert DivX back to AV1 and recover the lost detail; re-encoding never adds information. Keep your original AV1 file as the master and treat the DivX copy as a playback-only version for old hardware.
In our testing, a 1080p 60-second AV1 clip at roughly 3 Mbps re-encoded to DivX at the default Very High preset produced a file around 40-55 MB — larger than the AV1 source because MPEG-4 ASP needs more bitrate for the same quality. Setting a Specific file size lets you target an exact result, for example to fit several clips on one 4.7 GB data DVD.
DivX only makes sense if you have a specific DivX-certified player you can't replace — a 2005-era DVD player, an Archos portable, a kiosk. For anything modern, AV1 to MP4 with H.264 is the better choice: it plays on virtually every phone, TV, and browser and compresses far better than DivX. Use DivX only when the target hardware leaves you no other option.
