This conversion runs backwards through about fifteen years of video coding, and that is the point. AV1 is the Alliance for Open Media's royalty-free codec, with its bitstream specification published in 2018 and hardware decoders only appearing in the 2020s. DivX is an MPEG-4 Part 2 implementation from the era of burned discs and living-room DVD players. Nothing certified for DivX has ever heard of AV1, so the only way to get a clip onto that hardware is to re-encode it into the codec the player was built for — accepting a bigger, less efficient file in exchange for playback.
DivX is a brand rather than a standard. The original DivX codec is an implementation of MPEG-4 Part 2, the Advanced Simple Profile generation of MPEG-4 video that sat between MPEG-2 and H.264, and that is the video this page produces. The output is written as MPEG-4 Part 2 video with MP3 audio in an AVI container, carrying the .divx extension — historically the same combination that DivX-certified DVD players, portable media devices, and set-top boxes were tested against.
Two consequences follow from that, and they explain most of the questions below. First, .divx and .avi here describe the same bytes with different names, because the container is AVI either way. Second, because DivX video is MPEG-4 Part 2, it is interchangeable in practice with Xvid — the independent open-source encoder for the same part of the standard — which is why players advertise support for both together. If your target device names Xvid specifically, AV1 to Xvid writes the same generation of video under that codec name.

.avi if the player is fussy about extensions. The container is AVI already; renaming changes nothing but the label.If the device is anything made in the last decade, none of this is necessary — use AV1 to MP4 instead and get a smaller, better-supported file.
Because the certification predates the codec by more than a decade. A DivX badge means the device decodes the DivX flavour of MPEG-4 Part 2 in hardware; AV1 is an entirely different codec family whose specification was published in 2018, and no amount of firmware on a DVD-era player will decode it. Re-encoding to DivX gives that hardware exactly the bitstream it was certified for.
They overlap. Both DivX and Xvid are encoders for MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile, which is why players almost always list them together and why files from one usually play on a decoder built for the other. "MPEG-4" on its own is ambiguous in conversation, because it also covers MPEG-4 Part 10 — better known as H.264 — which is a newer and far more efficient standard. This page produces Part 2 video, not H.264.
No — expect it to grow. AV1 is one of the most efficient codecs in production and MPEG-4 Part 2 is two generations behind it, so holding the same visual quality takes noticeably more bits. If you need a size ceiling, use Specific file size under File Compression, but understand the trade: pushed low, MPEG-4 Part 2 shows blocking and mosquito noise much sooner than AV1 would.
.avi?The output is MPEG-4 Part 2 video with MP3 audio in an AVI container, named .divx. Renaming the download to .avi is completely safe — the bytes are identical, and only the label changes. Players that identify files by their internal FourCC tag will see the DivX video either way; players that go by extension may prefer one or the other, so try both before assuming a file is broken.
Only if the source has an audio track to carry over. A bare .av1 file is a raw video bitstream with no audio in it at all, so converting one produces a silent .divx regardless of which audio codec is selected. AV1 files exported from XConvert are the exception — those are wrapped in a Matroska container and keep their audio despite the .av1 name, and that track is re-encoded to MP3 on the way into the AVI.
Yes to the first, and converting back does not undo it. This is a lossy-to-lossy re-encode: the DivX output inherits every artifact already baked into the AV1 source and adds its own. You can run the result back through DivX to MP4 or any other target later, but a re-encode never restores discarded detail — it just re-compresses what survived. Keep the AV1 as your master and treat the .divx as a disposable playback copy.
Match the device rather than the source. A DVD-era player was sold for standard-definition television, so a full-resolution 1080p or 4K re-encode may decode slowly, stutter, or be rejected outright even though the codec is correct. Set Video resolution to a preset at or below what the hardware was built for, and pair it with a capped bitrate. Devices certified under the later "DivX Plus HD" programme are a different story — that tier moved to H.264 in MKV, so AV1 to MP4 suits them better.
