A raw .av1 file is an AV1 video elementary stream — the royalty-free codec from the Alliance for Open Media — with no container and no audio track. F4V is Adobe's MP4-based Flash video container, the modern successor to FLV. Converting AV1 to F4V re-encodes the video to H.264 (the only codec F4V carries) and wraps it for legacy Flash-based players. This is a genuine transcode, not a remux, so expect some generation loss. If your target isn't a Flash projector or an old tool that specifically ingests F4V, MP4 is almost always the better choice — it uses the same H.264 video but in a container that's still supported everywhere.

Because Adobe ended Flash Player support on December 31, 2020 and began blocking Flash content on January 12, 2021, no modern browser plays F4V. For anything new, convert AV1 to MP4 instead — it carries the same H.264 video in a container that's universally supported.
No. FLV is Adobe's older Flash container, originally built around the Sorenson Spark and VP6 codecs. F4V is the newer container Adobe introduced in 2007, built on the ISO base media file format (the same foundation as MP4) so it could carry H.264 video and AAC audio. They share the Flash heritage but are technically different files; F4V is sometimes informally called "Flash MP4."
Some loss is unavoidable. AV1 and H.264 are different codecs, so this conversion fully decodes the AV1 stream and re-encodes it as H.264 — a lossy step regardless of settings. To minimize visible loss, use a high-quality preset or a low Constant Quality (CRF) value. In our testing, a Very High preset keeps the output visually close to the source on typical footage, at the cost of a larger file than AV1 would have produced.
Only if your source did. A raw .av1 elementary stream is video-only — there is no embedded audio track to carry over — so the resulting F4V will be silent unless you supply audio separately. If you need sound, start from a container (such as an MKV or WebM holding the AV1 video plus an audio track) rather than a bare .av1 file.
Almost none in terms of video: both wrap H.264, and F4V is built on the same ISO base media format as MP4. The difference is support. MP4 plays in every modern browser, phone, TV, and editor, while F4V is tied to the dead Flash ecosystem. Choose F4V only when a specific legacy tool demands that extension; otherwise convert to MP4.
