A BMP is a single still picture and DivX is a video format, so this conversion does not simply "reformat" your image — it builds a short silent video clip that holds your bitmap on screen for a length of time you choose. This walkthrough is for anyone who needs a still photo to play on a DivX-certified DVD or media player, a CD-era set-top box, or a video timeline that will not accept an image. It covers the settings that genuinely change the result (duration, frame size, background colour, quality), what the .divx file actually contains, and where DivX loses badly to MP4.

With Merge images selected, total runtime is just the number of bitmaps multiplied by the per-frame duration — twelve bitmaps at 2 seconds each give a 24-second clip. A few more things worth knowing before you convert:

DivX in an AVI-style file is a legacy endpoint — it exists for DivX-certified DVD players and Xvid-era hardware that predate H.264, and it has no advantage on anything newer. If your target is a modern phone, browser, social platform, or editor, use BMP to MP4 for a clip that plays everywhere, or BMP to AVI if a tool specifically demands the AVI extension. If the goal is a looping animation on a web page rather than a video file, an animated image beats any video container for this job. And if you already have a DivX file you are trying to modernise, DivX to MP4 is the direction you want.
No. A bitmap contains only pixels, so the resulting clip has no audio track at all — it is silent by construction, not by a setting you can flip. If you need sound, add it afterwards in a video editor, which is also where you would sync it to the image's on-screen time.
Exactly as long as the Image Duration you choose, multiplied by the number of bitmaps if you selected Merge images. The dropdown spans a single frame (1/60s, 1/30s, 1/24s) up to 10 seconds per frame, so one bitmap at 5 seconds gives a 5-second clip and eight bitmaps at 5 seconds give 40 seconds.
MPEG-4 Part 2 video — the Advanced Simple Profile codec that DivX 4, 5, and 6 popularised — carried in an AVI-structured file that uses the .divx extension, with no audio stream. The Video Codec control on this page lists DivX and nothing else, because that is the only sensible payload for this container. Note this is not the DivX Media Format that DivX 6 introduced for menus and multiple tracks; it is the plain codec-in-AVI arrangement DivX-certified players expect.
Only for old hardware. DivX began as Jérôme Rota's "DivX ;-)" hack in the late 1990s, became a real product with DivX 4.0 in 2001, and is still maintained as consumer software by DivX, LLC — but the codec itself is MPEG-4 Part 2, a generation behind H.264. Phones, browsers, smart TVs, and editors all favour MP4 now. Pick DivX when a DivX-certified player is the destination; otherwise convert to MP4.
Because video codecs spend bits per second, not per image. MPEG-4 Part 2 compresses by predicting motion between frames, and a still image gives it nothing to predict — so a ten-second 1080p clip stores ten seconds' worth of bitrate for a picture that never changes. Shorten the Duration, lower the resolution, or drop the Quality Preset a step to cap the result — file-size targeting modes don't appear for image sources.
VLC and the free DivX Player open .divx and .avi clips on Windows and macOS, and any player built on FFmpeg's demuxers will handle the file too. What generally will not play it: browsers, phones, and the built-in players on recent versions of Windows and macOS, all of which dropped native DivX support. That gap is the main reason MP4 is the safer choice for anything you intend to share.
Yes — that is what Merge strategy → Merge images does. Upload the bitmaps in the order you want them, choose a Duration for how long each one holds, and you get a single clip. Choosing Video per image instead gives you one separate .divx file per bitmap, which is what you want when the images are unrelated.
The image is scaled to fit inside the frame you chose without distorting it, and the leftover area is filled with the Background Color, which is White unless you change it. A portrait bitmap in a 1920 x 1080 frame therefore gets white pillars either side. To avoid bars entirely, leave Video resolution on Keep original, or pick a Fixed Resolution with the same aspect ratio as your bitmap — there are square, vertical, and ultrawide presets in that list.
