CAVS is a Chinese AVS-based video format that almost nothing outside China plays natively, so a .cavs file is awkward to share or open on a typical PC or media player. No. Re-encoding can only preserve or reduce the detail already in the source; it cannot add resolution or sharpness that the original CAVS file never captured. DivX (MPEG-4 Part 2) is also an older, less efficient codec than H.264, so at a matching file size it generally looks slightly softer than an MP4 conversion. Convert to DivX for playback compatibility, not for a quality upgrade.
The one real reason is hardware: DivX-certified standalone DVD players, older smart TVs, and set-top boxes can read DivX/Xvid files from a disc or USB stick but were never designed to decode Chinese AVS. A .cavs file holds video encoded with Chinese AVS (AVS1), China's national video coding standard ratified in 2006. It was built for Chinese digital TV and DVD/home-theater equipment, so mainstream desktop and mobile players usually lack the decoder.
