DivX is MPEG-4 Part 2 (Advanced Simple Profile) video, normally sitting in an AVI-derived container with an MP3 soundtrack. RM is RealNetworks' RealMedia container, the streaming format of the RealPlayer era. This converter decodes your DivX and re-encodes it as RealVideo inside a .rm file so a legacy RealPlayer install or an old .rm-based archive can take it. Go in with clear eyes: RM is an obsolete delivery format, and this is a full re-encode, so there is one generation of loss. If your goal is a file that plays on anything modern, convert DivX to MP4 instead.

RealVideo is an old codec family with hard structural limits, and our pipeline enforces them for you rather than letting the job fail. Three behaviours are worth knowing before you compare the output against your source.

None of these is a failure mode — they are what makes the file a valid RealMedia stream. They do mean a high-bitrate HD source will be constrained on the way into a format that was designed for dial-up and early broadband.

VLC and MPC-HC open many .rm files through their own RealVideo and RealAudio decoders, though specific variants can trip them up. No mainstream browser plays .rm at all. That narrow support is exactly why RM only makes sense for legacy workflows — for anything else, DivX to MP4 is the safer target.
The Audio Codec list offers AAC, AC3, and RealAudio 1.0. AAC is the modern, efficient choice and is what you want if the file is destined for a player with broad codec support. Pick RealAudio 1.0 when you are feeding genuinely old RealPlayer-era software that expects a RealAudio track, and AC3 when a downstream system specifically asks for Dolby Digital.
Because the FFmpeg engine behind the conversion ships encoders for RealVideo 1.0 and 2.0 only. FFmpeg's own format and codec table marks RealVideo 3.0 and RealVideo 4.0 as decode-only — it can read those streams but cannot create them. Since RV40 is what .rmvb files typically carry, no online transcoder built on FFmpeg can produce a true RV40 file.
The same RealVideo 1.0 or 2.0 stream in a RealMedia container, because that is the only RealVideo our encoder can write. The DivX to RMVB route exists for workflows that require the .rmvb extension, but it is not the variable-bitrate RV40 encoding that the extension historically implied.
RealVideo encodes in 16-pixel macroblocks, so our pipeline aligns the output dimensions to the nearest multiple of 16. A 1918×1078 source, for example, cannot be written as-is. The shift is at most a handful of pixels and the aspect ratio is preserved as closely as the alignment allows.
Because the RealMedia container limits how much data a single packet can carry — roughly 64 KB. A bitrate that would push a keyframe past that limit produces an unwritable file, so the encoder caps the request at the highest value that still muxes cleanly. If you need higher quality than that ceiling allows, RM is simply the wrong container for the material.
Yes, one generation. DivX is already lossy, and RealVideo re-compresses the decoded frames with an older, less efficient codec — this is a transcode, never a rewrap. Keeping Quality Preset at "Very High (Recommended)" and the original resolution minimises it, but the RV10/RV20 encoders are a generation behind MPEG-4 ASP to begin with. Always keep the original .divx as your master.
