How to Convert DNG to ICO

What the Converted ICO Contains

The result is a single-image ICO: one size, one colour depth. That is a deliberate difference from a hand-built icon set, which can carry 16, 32, 48, and 256 px versions of the same artwork in one file so Windows can choose per context. If you need that multi-size bundle, generate each size here and combine them in an icon editor, or start from artwork with clean edges and use PNG to ICO — a PNG source also gives you a real alpha channel, which a RAW photo cannot.

What is the largest icon this converter can produce?

256 pixels on the longest side, which is also the maximum an ICO entry can describe and the largest size Windows renders. The preset list runs 256P, 192P, 180P, 128P, 64P, 48P, 32P, 24P, 16P, and 256P is selected when the page loads.

Why isn't my icon square?

Because the photo isn't. The preset sets the height and the converter never crops or pads, so a 3:2 landscape frame at 256P comes out 384×256 — wider than the 256-pixel ceiling an ICO directory can record — while a portrait frame comes out narrower than it is tall, which is fine. Windows' own icon sets are square and shell surfaces are laid out for square art, so crop the DNG to 1:1 before converting if the icon will sit in a taskbar, a shortcut, or a browser tab.

Can one ICO file hold several sizes at once?

The format can — that is a core ICO feature, and it is why a well-made application icon looks sharp at both 16 px and 256 px. This converter writes one image per file at the size you choose. Convert once per size you need, then merge them in a dedicated icon editor if you want a single multi-size .ico.

Will the icon have a transparent background?

Not from a RAW source. ICO supports 32-bit colour with an 8-bit alpha channel (Windows XP and later), but a DNG is an opaque sensor capture with no alpha to carry over, so the icon is a filled rectangle. For a cut-out icon, start from artwork that already has transparency and use PNG to ICO.

Is a favicon.ico file still worth generating?

Yes, as a fallback. Browsers now prefer PNG or SVG icons declared with <link rel="icon">, but many still probe /favicon.ico at the site root when no link element is present, and some feed readers, bookmark tools, and older clients only look for it. A 32×32 or 48×48 ICO at the root remains cheap insurance.

Why does my photo look unrecognisable at icon size?

Because detail does not survive a 20-fold reduction. Fine texture, small faces, and subtle tonal transitions all disappear below roughly 64 px, and the RAW's high bit depth is flattened to 8 bits per channel in the process. Icons read best when the source is a single high-contrast subject that still makes sense as a silhouette.

What software opens or edits an ICO file?

Windows itself for every shortcut, application, and taskbar icon, and browsers for favicons. For editing, IrfanView, GIMP, and Paint.NET open and export ICO directly, and Photoshop can with an ICO plug-in. Most icon-focused tools also handle the multi-size bundling that this converter does not.

I actually want a viewable picture, not an icon — what should I use?
