DNG (Adobe Digital Negative) is a raw still photograph — a single frame of unprocessed sensor data. MXF (Material Exchange Format) is a professional video container used in broadcast and post-production. Converting one to the other wraps your single photo as a short, silent MXF video clip that simply holds the image on screen. It does not animate, and it produces no audio. For most people MXF is the wrong target — see "Is MXF the right output?" below before you start.

MXF is a niche professional wrapper, not a general-purpose video format. A media player, phone, or browser will usually refuse to open an MXF, and the conversion flattens your raw's wide latitude and high bit depth into ordinary 8-bit video. Pick MXF only when a specific professional workflow demands it — for example, ingesting a still into an Avid or Premiere broadcast timeline, or matching a station's MXF delivery spec. In those cases, confirm whether the destination wants OP1a (a single self-contained file) or Avid-style OP-Atom before you build the rest of your project around it.
If you just want a viewable photograph, convert DNG to JPG — a JPG opens everywhere with no video wrapper. If you want a shareable clip of the image for a phone, social feed, or ordinary editor, DNG to MP4 is far more universal than MXF and uses the broadly compatible H.264 codec.
No. A DNG is a single still photograph, so the MXF simply holds that one image on screen for the Duration you set. There is no panning, no animation, and no hidden motion inside a single raw file. To build a sequence, upload several DNGs and choose Merge images so each photo gets the same on-screen time.
Because a still photo contains no sound. This conversion produces a video-only MXF — the container can carry a PCM audio track, but there is nothing to put in it. Add music or narration later in a video editor if you need it.
OP1a is the general-interchange operational pattern: one self-contained file with its video (and any audio) interleaved together, which most broadcast and ingest workflows accept. OP-Atom is a highly constrained pattern that stores a single essence stream per file and is what Avid Media Composer expects for its media. Check the requirements of the system you are delivering to — if you are unsure, OP1a is the safer general-purpose choice.
Yes, some loss is unavoidable. DNG holds high-bit-depth, unprocessed sensor data with wide dynamic range; the MXF output is rendered to standard 8-bit video. For viewing the difference is rarely visible, but treat the MXF as a delivery file and keep the original DNG if you plan to grade or edit later.
For most uses, no. MXF is a professional broadcast and post-production wrapper that everyday players and browsers do not open. If you only need the picture, convert DNG to JPG. If you need a clip to share or drop into a normal editor, DNG to MP4 is more compatible. Choose MXF only when a specific professional pipeline requires it.
