A .jfif file is plain JPEG — .jfif, .jpg, and .jpeg are the same baseline 8-bit JPEG bytes under different extensions. Converting it to HEIF (ISO/IEC 23008-12, the still-image container that usually holds an HEVC/H.265-encoded photo) trades near-universal compatibility for a smaller file: HEIF can be up to about 50% smaller than JPEG at comparable quality and supports up to 16-bit color. The catch is that your source is already lossy JPEG, so HEIF re-encodes it — you save space but do not recover detail JPEG already discarded, and only Apple devices and Windows (with the HEVC extensions) open HEIF reliably.

HEIF is one of several modern still-image formats that beat JPEG on size. They differ mainly in who can open them, so pick by destination rather than by compression ratio alone:

Note that HEIF and AVIF are close relatives: both store a still image inside the same ISO base media container family, and they differ mainly in the codec doing the compressing — HEVC for HEIF, AV1 for AVIF. That is why AVIF is the better web choice: the codec is royalty-free and browsers actually ship a decoder for it.

HEIF support is limited. It opens natively on iOS 11+, macOS High Sierra and later, and on Windows 10/11 once the HEVC/HEIF media extensions are installed. Most browsers — Chrome, Firefox, and Edge — cannot display HEIF at all; only Safari 17+ shows it. For something that opens everywhere, convert to JPG instead.
No. Browsers other than Safari 17+ cannot render HEIF, so it is a poor choice for web pages. For modern, efficient web images with broad browser support, WebP is the better target — far smaller than JPEG and supported in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari.
HEIF can be up to roughly 50% smaller than JPEG at comparable quality, though the real savings depend on the photo and your Quality Preset. Highly detailed photos compress best; an image that is already a small, heavily compressed JPEG will show a smaller reduction.
HEIF is the standard; HEIC is the everyday name for one particular flavour of it. ISO/IEC 23008-12 defines the High Efficiency Image File Format — a container that can hold a still image, a burst, an image sequence, depth maps, and auxiliary layers, without dictating which codec compresses the pixels. When the pictures inside are coded with HEVC/H.265, the file is normally given the .heic extension and the image/heic type; the generic .heif extension and image/heif type cover the container more broadly. In practice the two are used almost interchangeably, and an app that opens one nearly always opens the other. Apple adopted the format as the default camera output with iOS 11 in 2017, which is why most HEIF files people encounter arrive as .heic off an iPhone.
It depends entirely on where the file has to open. HEIF wins inside Apple's ecosystem, because iOS, macOS, and Photos handle it natively and the image sits happily alongside everything the camera already produced. AVIF wins on the web, because it is decoded by Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16.4+, and Edge 121+, while HEIF is displayed only by Safari 17+. Both are built on the same ISO base container and both are dramatically more efficient than JPEG, so you are not sacrificing much either way — the deciding question is whether the picture is destined for an Apple device or for a browser. If it is going on a web page, JFIF to AVIF is the better conversion.
