Why Convert M4R to M4A?
M4R and M4A are siblings: both are MPEG-4 files holding AAC audio. The extension is what decides how software files them. Apple software lists an M4R as a ringtone and an M4A as music, and plenty of other software only knows the second one. Typical reasons to switch:
- Listen to a tone as a regular track. An M4A goes into the Music app or any music library like any other song.
- Open it in tools that filter by extension. Audio editors, upload forms and chat apps often accept
.m4abut hide or reject.m4r. - Share a ringtone you made. Someone who just wants to hear it can play an M4A on practically any current phone or computer.
- Make changes on the way. Trim the clip, switch to mono, lower the bitrate or change the sample rate while you convert.
Where the M4R came from does not change the result: a tone exported from GarageBand, one made with another ringtone app, or one somebody sent you all hold AAC in MPEG-4, and all convert the same way as long as they are not copy-protected.
On Android, an M4A plays fine, but MP3 or OGG are the usual ringtone formats; the M4R converter offers both.
Rename or Convert?
Because the container and the codec are the same, renaming ringtone.m4r to ringtone.m4a usually works and leaves the audio untouched. This page always re-encodes: it decodes the AAC and encodes it again, which costs a small amount of quality but lets you change the file. Pick whichever matches what you need.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is M4R to M4A just a rename?
As far as the file format goes, nearly. Both are AAC in MPEG-4, and the .m4r extension mainly tells Apple software to treat the file as a tone. A plain rename keeps the audio bit for bit. Converting here re-encodes the audio so you can trim it, change the bitrate or switch channels at the same time.
Will I lose quality converting M4R to M4A?
Very little if the bitrate is at or above the ringtone's own. Any lossy re-encode discards some detail, so a Constant Bitrate of 192 or 256 kbps is a safe pick for music. If you need no changes at all, renaming is lossless.
Can I get an Apple Lossless (ALAC) M4A?
Not on this page; it writes AAC. An ALAC copy would not restore anything anyway, because the ringtone's AAC loss is permanent. For a lossless working copy, FLAC or WAV from the M4R converter keeps the decoded audio exactly.
Can an M4A be used as an iPhone ringtone?
Not as is. iPhone lists custom ringtones from .m4r files, or from GarageBand, which can import an audio file and share it as a ringtone. To go back, use M4A to M4R.
Should I re-encode to M4R instead?
If the file should stay a ringtone and you only want it shorter, smaller or mono, M4R to M4R keeps the ringtone extension and shows a note under Trim's Duration about Apple's 30-second ringtone length.
Will the M4A play on Windows and Android?
Generally yes. Current versions of Windows, macOS, Android and players such as VLC decode AAC in MPEG-4. Very old car stereos and basic MP3 players are the usual exceptions; MP3 is the safer target for those, and the M4R converter offers it alongside every other format.
Will the M4A be the same length as the ringtone?
Yes, unless you use Trim. Without a start time and duration the whole ringtone is converted; with them, only the section you choose is written to the M4A.
What happens to my files?
