MPG is a legacy desktop video container — usually MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video with MP2 audio, standardized by ISO/IEC for discs and broadcast. 3G2 is the 3GPP2 mobile container built for CDMA2000 phones, the carrier-network twin of GSM's .3gp. This conversion re-encodes both the picture and sound down to a small, old-mobile format, so be clear about why first: the 3G CDMA networks 3G2 targeted have been shut down since the end of 2022, and modern phones play MP4 universally. Reach for 3G2 only when a specific old CDMA handset, MMS gateway, or 3GPP2-based player on the other end requires it — otherwise convert MPG to MP4 instead.

Both 3G2 and 3GP are structurally based on the same ISO base media file format, so they look nearly identical inside. The split is by network: .3gp came from 3GPP for GSM/UMTS phones, while .3g2 came from 3GPP2 for CDMA2000 phones, and 3G2 adds CDMA speech codecs while dropping a couple of the newer AAC/AMR variants. By default this converter writes H.264 video with AMR audio inside the 3G2 container, which suits CDMA handsets from roughly 2009 onward. For older phones you can switch the Video Codec to H.263 or MPEG-4 and keep audio on AMR Narrow Band; if the device supports it, AAC is also available. The 3G2 standard additionally defines CDMA-specific speech codecs such as QCELP, EVRC, and SMV, but H.264 plus AMR is the most broadly playable pairing this tool produces.
Yes — this is a lossy transcode into a format designed for low-bandwidth CDMA delivery, so expect a visible drop, especially in resolution and detail. That trade-off is the format's whole point: 3G2 exists to make a clip tiny and playable on limited hardware. Because MPG sources are already compressed (MPEG-1/MPEG-2), converting to 3G2 stacks a second generation of lossy compression on top. If you do not actually need the 3G2 container, converting to MP4 keeps far more quality at a similar size.
Match the handset. The two safe legacy sizes are 176×144 (QCIF) and 320×240 (QVGA); many early feature phones only decode H.263 at QCIF. Set it under Video resolution using Preset Resolutions or Width x Height. Going larger risks a file the phone cannot open, while going smaller than the screen needs throws away quality for no benefit. In our testing, a one-minute SD MPG re-encoded to 176×144 H.263 came out to a few hundred kilobytes — small enough for legacy MMS but visibly soft, which is exactly the format's design point.
On a desktop, VLC Media Player plays .3g2 files directly on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and QuickTime can open many of them on macOS. Mobile playback is less reliable: current Android and iOS devices have largely standardized on MP4/H.264 and may not play 3G2 out of the box. For network delivery, no — Verizon shut down its 3G CDMA network on December 31, 2022, and Sprint's CDMA service ended earlier, so there is no live CDMA network to stream a .3g2 over. The format remains useful only offline: feeding a preserved handset for testing or display, satisfying an embedded device or test harness that hard-codes .3g2 ingest, or matching a legacy spec in an archival workflow. For everyday playback, MPG to MP4 is the right call.
