What is the difference between a 3G2 and a 3GP file?

Both carry H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, or H.264 video, but 3G2 also allows CDMA-specific speech codecs such as QCELP, EVRC, and SMV that 3GP does not. Will converting 3G2 to MPG improve the video quality?

No. A 3G2 file is already low-resolution and lossily compressed, and converting it to MPG cannot recover detail that was never recorded — there is no upscaling that adds real information. The conversion re-encodes the existing picture into MPEG-2 (or MPEG-1) video, which can add a small amount of further loss. Does this output MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video?

You can switch the Video Codec dropdown to MPEG-1 if you are specifically targeting Video CD or an older device that requires it. Both produce a valid MPEG program stream; MPEG-2 is the safer general-purpose choice. In our testing, a short QCIF-resolution 3G2 phone clip converted to a clean, VLC-playable MPEG-2 program stream at the default Very High preset without any manual codec changes.

What happens to the audio in my 3G2 file?

Many CDMA-phone clips carry QCELP or EVRC speech audio — codecs MPG containers do not use — while others use AMR or AAC. Whatever the source, the audio is re-encoded to MP2, the audio layer MPEG program streams expect. These speech codecs are tuned for voice in a narrow band, so re-encoding does not make speech sound better; it just makes the audio playable in MPEG-1/MPEG-2 players.

Why would I convert to MPG instead of MP4?

Only for compatibility with something that will not accept MP4 — an older DVD or Video CD authoring pipeline, a dated editing suite, or a legacy player that reads only MPEG program streams. For anything modern (phones, browsers, messaging, and smaller files at the same quality), MP4 with H.264 is the better target.
