Convert 3G2 to MPG Online

A .3g2 file is a 3GPP2 container — the format CDMA flip-phones and early CDMA smartphones recorded video to in the 2000s. MPG (an MPEG Program Stream) is the older desktop and disc-authoring format built on MPEG-1/MPEG-2. This tool re-encodes the two between each other so an old CDMA-phone clip will open in a media player, editor, or DVD/VCD authoring suite that only reads MPEG program streams. It is a legacy-to-legacy conversion: because the 3G2 source is low-resolution to begin with, MPG cannot add detail back — if your real goal is modern playback, convert to MP4 instead.

How to Convert 3G2 to MPG

  1. Upload Your 3G2 File: Drag and drop your .3g2 (or .3gp) onto the page, or click "Add Files" to pick it from your device; batch uploads convert with the same settings.
  2. Pick the Video Codec: Under Advanced Options the output defaults to MPEG-2 video with MP2 audio, what disc-authoring and desktop tools expect from an .mpg; switch to MPEG-1 only if a Video CD or older device specifically requires it.
  3. Set Quality, Resolution, or Trim (Optional): Use the Quality Preset dropdown (default Very High), or switch File Compression to "Specific file size" or "Constant Bitrate" to cap the output; leave Video resolution on "Keep original" since a low-res 3G2 gains nothing from upscaling, and use Trim to export only a time range.
  4. Convert and Download: Click Convert and save your .mpg. No sign-up, no watermark.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a 3G2 and a 3GP file?

They are near-identical containers split by mobile network family. 3GP (defined by 3GPP) was the format for GSM/UMTS phones, while 3G2 (defined by 3GPP2) was the format for CDMA2000 phones — the networks Verizon, Sprint, and US Cellular ran. Both carry H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, or H.264 video, but 3G2 also allows CDMA-specific speech codecs such as QCELP, EVRC, and SMV that 3GP does not. For this conversion the distinction rarely matters: both are re-encoded to MPEG-2 video and MP2 audio. This tool accepts both .3g2 and .3gp inputs.

Will converting 3G2 to MPG improve the video quality?

No. A 3G2 file is already low-resolution and lossily compressed, and converting it to MPG cannot recover detail that was never recorded — there is no upscaling that adds real information. The conversion re-encodes the existing picture into MPEG-2 (or MPEG-1) video, which can add a small amount of further loss. To keep that loss minimal, leave the resolution on "Keep original" and use a high Quality Preset rather than shrinking the frame or targeting a tiny file size.

Does this output MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video?

MPEG-2 by default, which most disc-authoring and desktop playback tools expect from an .mpg program stream. You can switch the Video Codec dropdown to MPEG-1 if you are specifically targeting Video CD or an older device that requires it. Both produce a valid MPEG program stream; MPEG-2 is the safer general-purpose choice. In our testing, a short QCIF-resolution 3G2 phone clip converted to a clean, VLC-playable MPEG-2 program stream at the default Very High preset without any manual codec changes.

What happens to the audio in my 3G2 file?

Many CDMA-phone clips carry QCELP or EVRC speech audio — codecs MPG containers do not use — while others use AMR or AAC. Whatever the source, the audio is re-encoded to MP2, the audio layer MPEG program streams expect. These speech codecs are tuned for voice in a narrow band, so re-encoding does not make speech sound better; it just makes the audio playable in MPEG-1/MPEG-2 players.

Why would I convert to MPG instead of MP4?

Only for compatibility with something that will not accept MP4 — an older DVD or Video CD authoring pipeline, a dated editing suite, or a legacy player that reads only MPEG program streams. For anything modern (phones, browsers, messaging, and smaller files at the same quality), MP4 with H.264 is the better target. With the CDMA networks 3G2 was built for now shut down — Verizon decommissioned its CDMA network on December 31, 2022 — these files are usually archival, so think about whether MP4 serves you better before settling on MPG.

Is the .mpg output suitable for burning a disc?

Yes — that is its main use case. An MPEG-2 program stream with MP2 audio is the lineage Video CD and DVD-Video are built on, so the .mpg slots into authoring tools like DVDStyler. Because a 3G2 source is low-resolution, a strict DVD-compliant disc may letterbox or rescale the picture; your authoring program enforces its own resolution and bitrate rules and may re-multiplex the stream.

How are my files handled, and how long do you keep them?

Files are uploaded over an encrypted connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically a few hours after conversion — no sign-up, no watermark, never shared or made public.
