.odg is an OpenDocument Graphics drawing — the vector shapes, connectors and text frames LibreOffice Draw and Apache OpenOffice Draw save inside a ZIP of XML. Xvid is not a container at all: it is a codec, an open-source implementation of MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile (ISO/IEC 14496-2), started in 2001 as a fork of OpenDivX and frozen since its final build, Xvid 1.3.7, on 28 December 2019. This page renders your drawing and encodes each page as a silent held frame with that codec, written to a file named .xvid — the right target when a "DivX Certified" player, a car head unit or an old set-top box is what has to open it.

Xvid names a codec, so .xvid is an unusual file name rather than a standard container. Most software that expects Xvid video expects to find it inside an AVI, which is what people mean when they talk about "an Xvid file" — if the device or player you are targeting was made in the DivX era, ODG to AVI with the Xvid codec selected is more likely to be recognised than the .xvid name.
Behind that naming, the pipeline is the same as any other video target here. LibreOffice opens the .odg as a Draw document, exports it through Draw's own PDF filter, and each page is rendered at 300 DPI into a frame before the encoder compresses it at 1 fps. Page count is preserved, so a multi-page drawing becomes a sequence of held frames in one file.
They are close relatives rather than the same thing. Both implement MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile, and both can generally decode each other's output, which is why Xvid was often described as "the free DivX". Xvid began as a fork of OpenDivX in 2001 after DivX Networks stopped publishing source, and it stayed open under the GPL while DivX went commercial.
.xvid or .avi?AVI, in almost every real case. Xvid is a codec and AVI is the container the DivX-era hardware world was built around — a player advertising Xvid support is looking for an .avi. Use the .xvid name only when a specific tool or watch-folder asks for that extension by name; otherwise ODG to AVI is more likely to just work.
Because Xvid takes a plain 1–31 quality value rather than a CRF, so the preset scaling that H.264 and H.265 respond to does not apply. Constant Quality is the control that actually changes the output on this page, and its scale runs the opposite way to what people expect: lower numbers are better. For hard-edged diagram work, values in the low single digits keep the lines clean.
No. An ODG is a still drawing with nothing to encode, so the Audio Codec group does not render and the output holds a video stream only. If a device refuses a video-only file — some old hardware players do — add a silent audio track in a video editor after converting.
Each page becomes its own held frame inside the same file, in page order, shown for the Image Duration you set. Three pages at the 5-second default give a 15-second clip. To get one file per page instead, save the pages as separate .odg files in LibreOffice Draw, upload them together and set Merge strategy to "Video per image".
Sharper than you might fear, provided you set the resolution deliberately. The page is rendered at 300 DPI first, so scaling down to a DVD-era or 720p raster is a downscale rather than an enlargement. What MPEG-4 Part 2 does struggle with is very fine detail at low quality values — thicken hairlines in Draw and lower the Constant Quality number if edges look mushy.
Only for old hardware. It predates H.264 and the hardware-decode era, and every modern device plays H.264 better and smaller. Its one advantage now is reach into the 2000s: DivX-certified DVD players, car head units and set-top boxes that will never see a firmware update. For anything current, ODG to MP4 is the right call.
