ASF (Advanced Systems Format) is Microsoft's streaming container — the same wrapper used by .wmv and .wma files, usually carrying Windows Media Video and Windows Media Audio. Xvid is not a container at all but an MPEG-4 Part 2 (Advanced Simple Profile) video codec, almost always delivered inside an AVI file. This conversion re-encodes a Windows Media clip into the Xvid codec so it plays on the standalone DivX/Xvid-era hardware players that were common in the 2000s but never learned to read Windows Media.

The WMV/VC-1 stream inside the ASF is fully decoded and then re-compressed with the Xvid (MPEG-4 ASP) codec, so some detail is discarded. Re-encoding can never add detail back, so the output is at best a faithful copy of the source. Choosing the "Very High" preset keeps the loss small enough to be hard to notice on most footage.
Almost the only good reason is an old standalone DVD or media player that advertises "DivX" or "Xvid Certified" playback but cannot read Windows Media. Xvid (MPEG-4 ASP) is an older, less efficient codec than H.264, so for anything that needs to play on phones, smart TVs, or modern browsers, converting ASF to MP4 gives smaller files at the same quality and far wider compatibility.
AVI. Xvid is a codec, not a file format, and AVI is the container the DivX/Xvid ecosystem standardized on. The result is an .avi file whose video track is Xvid-encoded MPEG-4 ASP, which is exactly what Xvid-certified hardware expects.
They are close cousins. Both encode MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile video, so a player that handles one usually handles the other. The difference is licensing: Xvid is open source under the GNU GPL, while DivX is a proprietary product. Their output is interoperable enough that "DivX/Xvid" is often written as a single category on old player spec sheets.
Not reliably. AVI cannot carry a Windows Media (WMV/VC-1) stream as-is, so the video has to be transcoded to a codec AVI supports — Xvid being the classic choice. If you only need an AVI wrapper and do not specifically need the Xvid codec, the ASF to AVI converter lets you pick the output codec there.
