People convert .ogv to DivX for one reason: an old DivX-certified DVD player or set-top box that reads AVI but won't touch Ogg. If that's you, DivX-in-AVI is the right target. If you just need the video to play on a phone, browser, or modern TV, convert to MP4 (H.264) instead — it plays everywhere and DivX does not. This page does the OGV-to-DivX transcode and explains when it's worth it.

The practical takeaway: DivX and Xvid are near-interchangeable siblings of the same standard, and H.264 is a full generation ahead of both. Pick DivX for the hardware, OGV to MP4 for everything else.
Yes. Both Theora/VP8 (inside OGV) and DivX are lossy codecs, and re-encoding from one to the other is a generation loss — the decoder rebuilds an approximate image, then DivX compresses that again. Use a high Quality Preset to keep the loss small. If you need an exact archival copy, keep the original OGV too.
Only if the player is DivX-certified — look for a "DivX" or "DivX Certified" logo on the unit or in its manual. Those players read DivX/Xvid video in an AVI container from USB or burned disc. A plain DVD-Video player that only plays pressed movie discs will not read an AVI file regardless of codec.
In our testing, standalone DivX players are happiest at standard-definition: 720x480 for NTSC regions or 720x576 for PAL. Many reject 1080p AVI files outright or stutter on them. Use the Preset Resolutions control to downscale before converting.
No, but they're close. Both implement MPEG-4 Part 2 (ASP) video, so most DivX-certified players accept Xvid too. The difference is licensing: DivX is proprietary (DivX, LLC), while Xvid is an open-source fork of the early OpenDivX code. For player compatibility they're usually interchangeable.
For almost any modern use, yes. MP4 with H.264 plays on phones, browsers, smart TVs, and editors, and compresses better than DivX at the same quality. Only choose DivX when a specific piece of legacy hardware requires it. If that's not your situation, use OGV to MP4.
A codec — DivX describes how the video is compressed, not how it is packaged. DivX video is carried in an AVI-based file, and the .divx extension is essentially a label that tells DivX-certified hardware what to expect inside. Most desktop players and media software treat .divx and .avi interchangeably. That gives you a useful fallback: if a device or program refuses the file outright, renaming the extension from .divx to .avi frequently gets it recognized, because nothing about the bytes changes.
Keep MP3 unless you know the player wants otherwise. MP3 inside AVI is the classic DivX pairing and is what DivX-certified hardware was built and tested around, so it is the safest default for stereo audio. AC3 (Dolby Digital) is worth choosing only in one situation: the source has multichannel audio you want to preserve and the target device explicitly lists AC3 or Dolby Digital support — a home-theatre receiver, for example. Note that an OGV source normally carries Vorbis or Opus stereo, so there is usually no surround track to preserve in the first place, which makes MP3 the right answer for nearly every conversion on this page.
