A RAF is a Fujifilm RAW photo, not footage, so "RAF to video" means rendering that single still to one frame and holding it on screen as a short, silent clip — and you choose the output format here, with MP4 (H.264) selected by default. Be honest before you start: a single RAF has no motion and no sound, so wrapping it in a video adds nothing to the picture and discards most of the RAF's resolution. If you actually want the photograph to view, print, or share, convert RAF to JPG or RAF to PNG instead. No. A RAF is one still photograph, so a single-file conversion produces a freeze-frame clip — the rendered image held on screen for the Image Duration you set, with no panning, movement, or audio. There is no motion inside a single Fujifilm RAW to animate, and a still carries no sound, so the converter writes no audio stream and the clip is silent by design. To build a moving sequence, upload several RAFs and choose Merge images, and each photo gets the on-screen time you set.
The Video File Extension dropdown defaults to MP4 with the H.264 codec, which is the most compatible choice — it plays on phones, browsers, smart TVs, and every common editor without extra software. Pick a different format only when a specific tool requires it: MOV for some Apple-centric editors, MKV for a flexible container, or WebM for the web. If you do not have a reason to change it, leave it on MP4; for an Apple library that expects the .m4v label, use RAF to M4V instead.
Yes, substantially, and it is inherent to the conversion rather than a tool flaw. A RAF holds unprocessed sensor data — on most Fujifilm X-series bodies arranged in the X-Trans color filter array, a 6×6 non-Bayer pattern rather than the standard Bayer mosaic on nearly every other camera (GFX medium-format and older bodies use a conventional Bayer grid). That data must be demosaiced to become viewable, which bakes in white balance, exposure, and tone and ends your RAW editing latitude. A 16-40 MP RAW (or 100+ MP on GFX) is then scaled down to a video frame, discarding most of the resolution, and because video codecs compress motion that a single still does not contain, the encode adds nothing to the picture. The X-Trans pattern mainly affects fine demosaic detail at the pixel level, which is mostly moot once the frame is downscaled. Keep the original RAF — the video is a delivery file, not an archive.
For almost every purpose, you should. A RAF is a photograph, so unless you specifically need a clip — a slideshow frame, a placeholder in a timeline, or a still feeding a video workflow — an image is the natural target. RAF to JPG gives you a small, universally viewable file, and RAF to PNG gives you a lossless one; both keep the full resolution that a video frame throws away. Convert to video only when something downstream genuinely expects a video file rather than a picture. In our testing, a 26-megapixel X-Trans RAF converted to the default MP4 produced a short, silent H.264 clip that played in Chrome, QuickTime, and VLC without any extra codec download.
Upload all the photos, set the Merge strategy to "Merge images", and pick an Image Duration — each photo holds on screen for that long, in upload order. Ten RAFs at the default 5 seconds per frame produce a 50-second silent clip; switch to "Video per image" instead if you want a separate file for every photo. The output stays silent either way, so add a soundtrack afterward in a video editor if the slideshow needs music.
Only the letterbox/pillarbox bars. Fujifilm stills are 3:2 while most video frames are 16:9, so when the shapes don't match, the photo is fitted inside the frame and the leftover bars take the Background Color you chose (white by default). It doesn't recolor or matte the photograph itself — pick a bar color that suits where the clip will play, or keep the original resolution to avoid bars entirely.
It renders the RAF with its embedded as-shot settings — white balance, exposure, and film-simulation choices as the camera recorded them — not a Lightroom-style develop pass. If the photo needs editing, do that first in a RAW editor, export a finished JPG or TIFF, and convert that to video; you'll keep full creative control instead of baking in the camera's defaults.
