.rm and .rmvb are the same RealNetworks container. The difference the extension advertises is the encoding strategy: RM files were typically constant-bitrate, built to hold a fixed stream rate over a dial-up or early broadband link, while RMVB stands for RealMedia Variable Bitrate — spend more bits on hard scenes, fewer on easy ones. In the wild, RMVB files almost always carry one of the later RealVideo codecs — RV30 or RV40. That matters, because those are the one thing this converter cannot write. This page explains exactly what it does produce, and where the controls have less effect than they appear to.

The asymmetry in that table is the honest headline of this page, and we confirmed it against the encoder and decoder lists directly: decoders exist for every RealVideo generation, encoders exist only for RV10 and RV20. There is no open encoder for the later ones, so no converter built on open tooling can produce them. The .rmvb you download here is therefore a RealMedia container holding RealVideo 1.0 or 2.0 — not the later RealVideo generation that a file called .rmvb normally contains.
That is fine if what you need is a RealMedia file with the .rmvb extension — an old media library, a device with a hard extension check, a catalogue that expects the name. It is not fine if you were hoping for the compression efficiency that made RMVB popular in the first place: RealVideo 1.0 and 2.0 are 1990s codecs and will not beat the RM you started from by any interesting margin. If the goal is smaller files or wider playback, RM to MP4 is the conversion that actually delivers it.
Three entries appear here and one of them does not do what its label says.
There is one more thing worth being explicit about: the configuration for this target has two competing rules about which audio codec should be preselected, so we will not tell you what the dropdown opens on — verify it yourself and set it deliberately. Whatever you choose, the RealAudio track in your source is fully decoded and re-encoded; Cook, SIPR and the 14.4/28.8 kbps variants cannot be carried across untouched.
Constraint Quality loses its cap. RealVideo encoders accept only simple bitrate or quantiser control, not the buffer-based rate control that Constraint Quality's Max bitrate field relies on, so those parameters are removed before encoding on this target. The quantiser value still applies. In practice Constraint Quality behaves the same as Constant Quality here — if you want a rate limit, use Constant Bitrate.
There is a hard bitrate cap derived from the container. The RealMedia muxer cannot write a packet larger than about 64 KB, and a keyframe is typically around three times the size of an average frame, so a maximum safe bitrate follows directly from the source's frame rate. Ask for more and the encode is quietly capped:

This almost never bites on genuine RealMedia sources, which were encoded in the hundreds of kilobits, but it is why a request for 15 Mbps on this page does not produce a 15 Mbps file.
Not in the way the RMVB name implies. The extension became popular alongside the later RV30 and RV40 encodes that varied their bitrate scene by scene, and those codecs cannot be written by any converter built on open tooling — only decoded. What you get here is a RealMedia container with the .rmvb extension holding RealVideo 1.0 or 2.0. If the extension is what you need, this is the right page; if variable-bitrate efficiency is what you need, convert to a modern codec instead.
No — it is the same RealNetworks container. RealNetworks used the .rmvb extension as a signal that the file inside used variable-bitrate encoding, generally with a later RealVideo generation. There is no separate specification and no structural difference in the wrapper. That is why converting .rm to .rmvb is a re-encode inside one format family rather than a move between two formats.
Because our pipeline substitutes AC-3 for that selection before encoding. The label is in the list, but the encode that runs is Dolby Digital. Your file is valid and will play — it simply contains AC-3 rather than the 14.4 kbps RealAudio codec. If you want to know exactly what you are getting, choose AAC or AC3 directly; AAC is the better-sounding choice at any bitrate you are likely to use.
RealVideo 2.0 if you have a free choice — it is the later of the two and slightly more capable. RealVideo 1.0 is the more conservative pick and is what very old RealPlayer builds and RealVideo-era hardware are most certain to handle. Neither is efficient by modern standards, so the decision only matters if you are targeting a specific old player; otherwise it barely affects the result.
Because it is removed before encoding on this target. RealVideo encoders support simple bitrate and quantiser control but not the buffer-based rate control that a maximum-bitrate constraint needs, so those parameters are stripped rather than passed through and rejected. The quantiser part of the setting still works, which makes Constraint Quality effectively identical to Constant Quality here. Use Constant Bitrate if you want a rate you can actually pin down.
No. RealVideo uses a quantiser scale from 1 to 31 that opens at 5, and lower means better quality — the opposite direction from how people usually think about a CRF number, and a completely different range. A value carried over from an H.264 workflow will produce a result nothing like what you expected. Treat 2 to 4 as high quality, 5 as the sensible starting point, and anything above 10 as heavily compressed.
Possibly not. Quality Preset on this codec works by scaling your source's own bitrate — the default Very High preset targets about 1.32 times what the source ran at, so an untouched conversion can come out larger than the input. If a smaller file is the goal, switch File Compression to Constant Bitrate and set a rate below your source's, or use Specific file size and name a number.
VLC and mpv both decode RealMedia, including every RealVideo generation, so a .rmvb opens fine on a computer with either installed. What has gone is the ecosystem around it: no browser plays RealMedia, no phone opens it without a third-party app, and RealPlayer itself is long past relevance. That is worth weighing before converting into the format — for anything you intend to watch, share or upload, RM to MP4 is the conversion that solves the problem.
