Does cropping preserve the animation in an animated GIF?

Yes. The crop is applied to every frame at the same coordinates, so timing, frame count, loop count, and disposal methods are all preserved. The output plays back identically to the input, just within the smaller window you selected.

Why is my cropped GIF sometimes larger than the original?

Animated GIFs are usually frame-optimized — only the pixels that change between frames are stored, with disposal methods controlling how each frame is composited.
