How to Convert 3FR to ICO

Will I lose quality converting 3FR to ICO?

A great deal, by design. A 3FR holds a full-frame, high-bit-depth medium-format capture; an ICO image is at most 256 × 256 pixels at 8 bits per channel. The wide dynamic range and high resolution of the raw are baked down to a standard 8-bit image and shrunk to icon size. That is expected for icon use — but it means an ICO is never a substitute for viewing or printing the original photo.

3FR stands for Hasselblad 3F RAW — the raw sensor format written by Hasselblad's medium-format cameras and digital backs, including the H-series bodies and CFV backs. It is a TIFF-based container holding the unprocessed, high-bit-depth capture straight off the sensor, which is why it must be demosaiced and rendered before it can become a normal image like an ICO.

Because it is a raw file rather than a finished picture, a 3FR is normally opened in Hasselblad Phocus or a raw-capable editor such as Lightroom, Capture One, or RawTherapee before any downstream conversion.

Will my ICO have a transparent background?

No. A 3FR is a photograph with no alpha channel, so the rendered icon is fully opaque even though the ICO format itself can store a 32-bit image with 8-bit transparency. To get a transparent icon — for example a logo with a see-through backdrop — you would need to mask the subject in an image editor before converting, since the tool cannot invent transparency the photo never had.
